Are environmental factors responsible for essential oil chemotype distribution of Balkan Juniperus communis var. saxatilis populations?

Summary: This study analyzed the genetic and essential oil (EO) variability of Juniperus communis var. saxatilis in the Balkan Peninsula. It found high genetic variability within populations and a total of 156 compounds representing 99.0% of total oil were detected and identified. Three chemotypes were detected in all samples, and their distribution was correlated with environmental factors.

Bioactivities of Salvia nemorosa L. inflorescences are influenced by the extraction solvents

Summary: The study explored the impact of different solvents on the bioactivities of Salvia nemorosa L. inflorescences, highlighting butanol as the most suitable solvent for wound healing improvement and ethanol/water combination for the highest antioxidant potential. The extracts showed potential in antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities, with one extract demonstrating immunomodulatory action and antibacterial mechanism. Overall, S. nemorosa inflorescences were found to be rich sources of bioactive polyphenols with various therapeutic applications.

Antioxidant and Cytoprotective Potential of the Essential Oil Pistacia lentiscus var. chia and Its Major Components Myrcene and α-Pinene

Summary: Although mastic oil and its major components did not exhibit significant direct antioxidant activity, they were able to increase mRNA levels of antioxidant response genes, suggesting an indirect antioxidant activity. These substances showed beneficial effects on cell viability and protection against UVB or H2O2-induced oxidative damage, as well as promoting cell migration and wound closure in a dose-dependent manner. Overall, mastic essential oil may exert promising cytoprotective properties through indirect antioxidant mechanisms.

The results showed that alpha-terpinyl acetate was rare in T. pulegioides essential oil, with stronger phytotoxic effects on monocotyledons compared to dicotyledons. The essential oil demonstrated high antimicrobial effects against fungi and dermatophytes, indicating its potential for developing preventive measures or drugs for mycosis.

Prunus spinosa L. leaf extracts: polyphenol profile and bioactivities

Summary: This study found that Prunus spinosa leaf extracts, particularly the acetone extract, contain high levels of phenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, exhibiting strong antioxidant properties. The aqueous and ethanol extracts showed antibacterial activity against certain bacteria and inhibitory effects on enzymes related to type II diabetes. Additionally, the ethanol extract displayed high potential in inhibiting alpha-glucosidase, surpassing the positive control drug. Moreover, the aqueous extract demonstrated antitumor effects on malignant cell lines.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical composition and synergistic effect of essential oils from Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Mentha pulegium, and Rosmarinus officinalis against Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus. Results show significant antibacterial efficacy, particularly with Mentha pulegium and Eucalyptus camaldulensis showing the best inhibition zones against the bacterial strains. The findings suggest the importance of these essential oils in treating urinary tract infections caused by resistant bacterial strains.
