High-Throughput Flow Injection Analysis-Mass Spectrometry (FIA-MS) Fingerprinting for the Authentication of Tea Application to the Detection of Teas Adulterated with Chicory

Monica Vila et al.

Summary: In this study, a non-targeted FIA-MS fingerprinting technique was used to characterize and classify tea and chicory. The results showed that FIA-MS fingerprints were excellent sample descriptors for discriminating between tea and chicory, as well as classifying and distinguishing among some tea groups. The use of PLS also yielded satisfactory results for the detection and quantitation of chicory adulteration in tea. Therefore, the non-targeted FIA-MS fingerprinting technique is a high-throughput, cost-effective, simple, and reliable approach for assessing tea authentication issues.

Metabolomic Profiling of Blood-Derived Microvesicles in Breast Cancer Patients

Judith Buentzel et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in the metabolome of microvesicles in the blood of breast cancer patients compared to controls, especially in the abundance of certain metabolites. Using targeted and untargeted mass spectrometry, specific metabolites were identified that distinguished between breast cancer and controls, as well as predicted overall survival in breast cancer patients. This suggests that these metabolites could serve as promising biomarkers and potentially play a role in tumor progression.

Untargeted metabolomics identifies succinate as a biomarker and therapeutic target in aortic aneurysm and dissection

Hongtu Cui et al.

Summary: Aortic aneurysm and dissection (AAD) are high-risk cardiovascular diseases with no effective cure. The study found that succinate plays an important role in the development of AAD, and plasma succinate concentrations can distinguish patients with AAD from healthy controls. Regulating succinate concentrations through the p38 alpha-CREB-OGDH axis in macrophages may have therapeutic potential for AAD.

Targeted and Untargeted Mass Spectrometry Reveals the Impact of High-Fat Diet on Peripheral Amino Acid Regulation in a Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease

Amelia L. Taylor et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown a significant impact of changes in peripheral pathways, such as amino acid and fatty acid metabolism, in both Alzheimer's disease (AD) and obesity. The study indicated that certain metabolic effects could be partially reversed through dietary changes, highlighting the importance of diet in mitigating the effects of AD. Overall, the findings suggest that obesity combined with AD may exacerbate cognitive impairment through dysregulated amino acid and fatty acid pathways, with APP/PSEN1 mice showing more sensitivity to a high-fat diet compared to wild-type mice.
