New primary immunodeficiencies 2021 context and future

Yesim Demirdag et al.

Summary: The International Union of Immunologic Societies (IUIS) IEI committee has updated the classification of IEIs since 2017, with 88 new gene defects and 75 new immune disorders. Increased utilization of genetic testing and strategic evaluation of genetic variants have not only identified novel IEI disorders, but also additional genetic causes for known IEI disorders. Investigation during the COVID-19 pandemic suggests that defects in Type I interferon signalling may underlie more severe disease.

Maternal Metabolome in Pregnancy and Childhood Asthma or Recurrent Wheeze in the Vitamin D Antenatal Asthma Reduction Trial

Mengna Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal metabolites during pregnancy have significant implications for child respiratory health, with a stronger relationship observed in later pregnancy. Certain coffee-related metabolites, as well as steroid and sphingolipid metabolites, were inversely associated with asthma risk. These findings suggest that alterations in prenatal metabolites may impact the development of offspring asthma.

Revisiting steroidogenesis and its role in immune regulation with the advanced tools and technologies

Soura Chakraborty et al.

Summary: Historically, tools and technologies have played a crucial role in facilitating scientific discoveries, including in steroid hormone research. Despite being considered a solved topic, there are still many unresolved questions in the field. Recent focus on the role of steroidogenesis in regulating inflammation and immunity has sparked new interest among researchers.

Pneumonia, Sinusitis, Influenza and Other Respiratory Illnesses in Acute Otitis Media-Prone Children

Michael E. Pichichero et al.

Summary: The study revealed that otitis-prone children are more susceptible to respiratory infections, showing higher rates of pneumonia, acute sinusitis, and influenza compared to non-otitis-prone children. This increased susceptibility was present from 6 months to 5 years of age, indicating the importance of monitoring and managing respiratory infections in otitis-prone children.

Regulation of the Immune System Development by Glucocorticoids and Sex Hormones

Linda Quatrini et al.

Summary: The neuro-endocrine system regulates immune system function and HSC differentiation through hormone release, affecting immune cell subsets. This regulation has long-term consequences during organism development, with the effects of GC exposure becoming evident in adulthood. In the context of HSCT, immune system development starts anew from donor HSCs.

Glucocorticoids in T cell development, differentiation and function

Matthew D. Taves et al.

Summary: Glucocorticoids have dual effects on the immune system, promoting and suppressing T cell immunity. They shape T cell responses in various ways, such as selecting appropriate T cell receptor self-affinities and regulating T cell trafficking between anatomical compartments.
