Monitoring lung injury with particle flow rate in LPS- and COVID-19-induced ARDS

Martin Stenlo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that real-time monitoring of particle flow rate (PFR) from exhaled breath may serve as a noninvasive method to measure the extent of lung injury and recovery over time in ECMO patients with ARDS. This approach could provide valuable clinical insights in evaluating lung injury progression and improving patient outcomes.

Particle flow rate from the airways as fingerprint diagnostics in mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit: a randomised controlled study

Filip Hallgren et al.

Summary: The study investigated PFR in different ventilation modes among patients without lung pathology. Results showed that PRVC led to lower PFR while patients on PSV had the highest PFR. Different ventilation modes resulted in unique particle patterns in exhaled air.

Novel non-invasive particles in exhaled air method to explore the lining fluid of small airways-a European population-based cohort study

Laith Hussain-Alkhateeb et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of anthropometric factors and gender on phospholipids, surfactant protein A (SP-A) and albumin of the lining fluid of small airways, as well as their association with asthma and smoking. The results showed that age was a significant predictor of phospholipids, certain components were higher among subjects with asthma, and smokers had higher levels of specific phospholipids compared with non-smokers. Most phospholipids significantly predicted the spirometry variables, indicating a potential for the PExA method to explore the role of lipids and proteins of surfactant in respiratory disease.
