Consumer preferences for local renewable electricity production in Japan: A choice experiment

Noriko Irie et al.

Summary: This study aimed to fill the research gap regarding electricity consumers' preferences for the geographic location of renewable energy production. The results showed that consumers had a higher willingness to pay for locally produced renewable electricity, and women and older people were more interested in renewable energy. Energy security was found to have a negative impact on the installation of renewable electricity.

Decarbonization strategies for Switzerland considering embedded greenhouse gas emissions in electricity imports

Martin Rudisuli et al.

Summary: Decarbonizing the energy system through electrification of heat and transport is only effective with low-carbon electricity sources. However, the greenhouse gas content of imported electricity must be accurately accounted for as many countries rely on imports. This study examines the implications on greenhouse gas emissions for various electricity demand and supply scenarios, and finds that a diversified electricity generation portfolio can lead to substantial GHG mitigation.

Renewable and non-renewable electricity-growth nexus in Asia: The role of private power plants and oil price threshold effect

Dzul Hadzwan Husaini et al.

Summary: Green energy promotes economic growth in a more environmentally friendly manner. In Asia, public power plants drive economic growth when oil prices are high, while private power plants perform well in triggering economic growth when oil prices are low. The government should improve the efficiency of the grid's transmission system and encourage the construction of more private power plants.

The role of concentrated solar power with thermal energy storage in least-cost highly reliable electricity systems fully powered by variable renewable energy

Kathleen M. Kennedy et al.

Summary: Policies in the US are calling for the use of variable renewable energy sources that can reliably meet electricity demand despite fluctuations. However, the role of concentrated solar power (CSP) and thermal energy storage (TES) in comparison to photovoltaics (PV) and batteries in a highly reliable, 100% renewable system has not been clearly evaluated. This study finds that CSP and PV do not directly compete, but TES competes with short-duration battery storage. The coupled CSP+TES system can provide reliability in the absence of other grid flexibility mechanisms, and its adoption is primarily limited by high CSP generation costs.

Improving the accuracy of electricity carbon footprint: Estimation of hydroelectric reservoir greenhouse gas emissions

A. Levasseur et al.

Summary: Hydropower is often seen as a low-carbon electricity source, but the flooding caused by dam construction can lead to an increase in biogenic greenhouse gas emissions, which are often overlooked in life cycle assessments. This study compares different methods to estimate hydropower reservoir emissions and finds that they contribute to a portion of the carbon footprint of electricity distributed in the Canadian province of Quebec.

Soft and hard aspects of green behaviour: A firm-level study of the pollution haven hypothesis in the Mediterranean Basin

Camilla Jensen

Summary: This paper tests the pollution haven hypothesis in the context of three economies on the borders of the European Union in the Mediterranean Basin: Greece, Italy, and Turkey. Large differences in soft and hard aspects of green behavior are revealed, with multinational firms more likely to use 'soft talk' strategies but also being more energy-intensive. Data on electricity consumption show differences in energy intensity between foreign and domestic firms, validating the pollution haven hypothesis.
