Tannin-Based Spontaneous Adhesion Superhydrophilic Coatings for Efficient Oil-in-Water Emulsion Separation and Dye Removal

Yijian Zheng et al.

Summary: It is significant to explore green, convenient, and widely applicable superhydrophilic coatings. This study proposes a strategy of using covalent cross-linking of tannic acid and tetrabutyl titanate to prepare a superhydrophilic coating. This coating can be simply applied on the porous substrate surface without additional binders. The modified surfaces exhibit intriguing superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, with significantly improved permeation flux and absorbance reduction, as well as acid- and alkali-resistant and mechanically robust properties.

Performance and economic analysis of a solar membrane distillation pilot plant under various operating conditions

Jihyeok Choi et al.

Summary: Although membrane distillation is a promising desalination process, it requires a large amount of thermal energy. Studies on combining renewable energy sources with membrane distillation are being conducted to reduce thermal energy consumption. Pilot plant experiments combining solar energy with a membrane distillation system showed that direct contact membrane distillation had a higher water flux compared to air gap membrane distillation. The use of solar energy decreased specific energy consumption and increased the gained output ratio. Therefore, combining solar energy with membrane distillation can improve its performance.

Analysis of fouling mechanism in ultrafiltration of produced water

Ashkan Alborzi et al.

Summary: The study compared three UF membranes and found that membranes with higher permeabilities tend to transition to cake formation as the predominant fouling mechanism more quickly. Lower trans-membrane pressure resulted in particle accumulation on the membrane surface leading to cake formation, while higher TMP experiments showed standard and intermediate blocking followed by cake formation.

Theoretical Investigation of Vapor Transport Mechanism Using Tubular Membrane Distillation Module

Adnan Alhathal Alanezi et al.

Summary: The primary objective of the study was to examine the vapor delivery mechanism through a tubular membrane distillation (MD) module. Experiment results showed that increasing feed temperature and flow rate had a positive impact on permeate flux, while feed concentration had a negative impact. The mass transport of water vapor was controlled by the Knudsen molecular diffusion transition mechanism, with the mass transfer coefficient calculated in agreement with experimental values. The resistance of the membrane became the predominant controlling step in the MD process.

Summary: Large volumes of water become contaminated with various chemical agents during Oil & Gas exploration activities, resulting in a complex wastewater stream known as produced water (PW). Nanofiltration (NF) membranes are a promising alternative for the treatment of PW to facilitate its re-use, but membrane fouling remains a major obstacle. The study found that fouling of PEM-based NF membranes during the treatment of artificial produced water is mainly caused by surfactant uptake inside of the PEM coating.
