Antimicrobial Triterpenoids and Ingol Diterpenes from Propolis of Semi-Arid Region of Morocco

Ralitsa Chimshirova et al.

Summary: The chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of propolis from a semi-arid region of Morocco were investigated. Fifteen compounds, including triterpenoids, macrocyclic diterpenes of ingol type, and aromatic derivatives, were isolated and their structures were determined. Most of the compounds showed good activity against bacteria and fungi, with compound 3 exhibiting the strongest activity. The combination of specific compounds found in Euphorbia plants may be a characteristic feature of propolis, and Euphorbia officinarum subsp. echinus could be a potential new source of propolis.
