Phages in the Gut Ecosystem

Michele Zuppi et al.

Summary: Phages are viruses that infect bacteria and are widely found in various environments. They are abundant in the human gut and may play an important role in modulating the gut ecosystem. Although the extent of their influence on the gut ecosystem is not fully understood, there is increasing evidence supporting their significance in the gut microbiome.

Compensatory intestinal antibody response against pro-inflammatory microbiota after bariatric surgery

Torsten P. M. Scheithauer et al.

Summary: Obesity and type 2 diabetes are growing burdens for individuals and the healthcare system. Bariatric surgery has been found to effectively reduce body weight, normalize glucose values, and reduce low-grade inflammation. This study investigated the effect of bariatric surgery on gut microbiome and antibody response in obese individuals with and without T2D. The findings suggest that bariatric surgery leads to an expansion of pro-inflammatory bacteria in the gut, but also enhances the antibody response, which may help reduce systemic inflammation and improve intestinal barrier function.

Analysis of colonic mucosa-associated microbiota using endoscopically collected lavage

Eiji Miyauchi et al.

Summary: Colonic lavage samples are useful for analyzing the mucosal microbiota in humans, as they contain a higher amount of bacterial DNA and are less contaminated with host DNA compared to other types of samples. The bacterial composition of lavage samples is intermediate between feces and biopsy, with mucosal bacteria enriched in biopsy also present in lavage samples. Additionally, differences in mucosal microbes between non-smokers and smokers can be detected in lavage samples, highlighting its potential for research on human mucosal microbiota.

Mucosa-Colonizing Microbiota Correlate With Host Autophagy Signaling in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Wenxue Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between bacteria and autophagy in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The findings suggest that UC patients exhibited more severe dysbiosis compared to CD patients, and CD patients showed greater transcriptional signaling activities of autophagy, ER stress, and bile acid production. The dominant and low-abundance bacteria were correlated with the autophagy signaling cascade. These observations highlight the importance of intestinal bacteria in IBD pathogenesis.

Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease Show IgG Immune Responses Towards Specific Intestinal Bacterial Genera

Arno R. Bourgonje et al.

Summary: The IgG immune response in patients with IBD is mainly directed at intestinal bacterial genera associated with the small intestine microbiota, with lower responses against colonic-type commensal bacteria. These findings suggest a strong immunological exposure to potentially pathogenic intestinal bacteria in patients with IBD.

Alteration of microbiota antibody-mediated immune selection contributes to dysbiosis in inflammatory bowel diseases

Eva Michaud et al.

Summary: The interaction between IgA and the gut microbiota may play a role in dysbiosis induction in inflammatory bowel diseases. Reverse-transcytosis is disrupted in ulcerative colitis, while extended in Crohn's disease. The interaction between IgA1 and the microbiota may have an impact on the composition of the gut microbiota.

Altered Pattern of Immunoglobulin A-Targeted Microbiota in Inflammatory Bowel Disease After Fecal Transplantation

Wen-qi Huang et al.

Summary: Adaptive immune response to the gut microbiota is a key factor in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This study analyzed fecal samples of IBD and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, and found that the percentage of IgA/G-coated bacteria can be used to assess the severity of IBD. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) can restore IgA-bacterial interactions in UC patients, resembling those in healthy donors. Additionally, specific bacteria, such as Megamonas, Acinetobacter, and Staphylococcus, may play a role in IBD pathogenesis.

Immunoglobulin subtype-coated bacteria are correlated with the disease activity of inflammatory bowel disease

Yutaro Masu et al.

Summary: In inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), the presence of Ig-coated bacteria in the intestine is associated with disease activity, with higher percentages of IgA and IgM-coated bacteria in IBD patients. Specific IgG subtypes coating bacteria were only found in IBD patients, and their levels correlated with disease activities in UC and CD patients. This suggests that analyzing Ig-coated bacteria and Ig subtypes using flow cytometry could provide useful indicators of disease activity and potential treatment targets for IBDs.
