Unraveling the Uncharacterized Domain of Carocin S2: A Ribonuclease Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum Bacteriocin

Ping-Chen Chung et al.

Summary: Carocin S2 is a bacteriocin produced by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum 3F3 strain with a low molecular weight. Through mutational research, the active sites of Carocin S2 were identified and it was found that the binding between the immunity protein and the bacteriocin was inhibited by an uncharacterized domain.

Protease Inhibitors from Solanum chacoense Inhibit Pectobacterium Virulence by Reducing Bacterial Protease Activity and Motility

Janak R. Joshi et al.

Summary: The study identified protease inhibitors (PIs) in wild potato Solanum chacoense M6 that contribute to resistance against Pectobacterium pathogens. These PIs inhibit bacterial protease activity, reduce motility, induce cell elongation, and modulate bacterial metabolism, leading to resistance against the pathogens. The findings provide important information for the discovery of resistance genes and the development of resistant potato varieties.

Solanimycin: Biosynthesis and Distribution of a New Antifungal Antibiotic Regulated by Two Quorum-Sensing Systems

Miguel A. Matilla et al.

Summary: The emergence of drug-resistant fungal infections has led to the search for new compounds to combat fungal pathogens. This study describes the discovery and characterization of a new antifungal compound, solanimycin, produced by a hybrid polyketide/nonribosomal peptide system. Solanimycin exhibited broad-spectrum antifungal activity against plant-pathogenic fungi and Candida albicans. The genomic cluster responsible for solanimycin production was identified and analyzed, and its production was enhanced under certain conditions. The study suggests potential utility of solanimycin for agricultural and clinical exploitation.

Pattern and causes of the establishment of the invasive bacterial potato pathogen Dickeya solani and of the maintenance of the resident pathogen D. dianthicola

Pauline Blin et al.

Summary: The study examined the patterns and causes of the establishment of invasive pathogen Dickeya solani in potato agrosystems in Europe, revealing differences in its aggressiveness on aerial parts and tubers. Comparison of 76 D. solani genomes identified important allele frequencies and demonstrated the role of the vfmB virulence gene in the ecology of the pathogens, providing new insights into the invasion dynamics and coexistence with resident species.

Interaction between Dickeya dianthicola and Pectobacterium parmentieri in Potato Infection under Field Conditions

Tongling Ge et al.

Summary: This study examined the presence of Dickeya dianthicola and P. parmentieri in potato samples collected in Northeastern USA, and conducted field trials to investigate their interaction and disease severity. The results showed that D. dianthicola was more virulent than P. parmentieri, but co-inoculation of both species led to increased disease severity compared to single-species inoculation.

QTLs for potato tuber resistance to Dickeya solani are located on chromosomes II and IV

Renata Lebecka et al.

Summary: This research identified QTLs for potato tuber resistance to D. solani and for tuber starch content, as well as investigated the relationship between these traits. Prominent QTLs for disease severity and incidence were identified on potato chromosome IV, with additional QTLs for starch content on other chromosomes. The findings suggest potential for marker development and further study in potato breeding programs.
