Improved Molecular Diagnosis and Culture of the Emerging Heteropathotype Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O80:H2 Using Its Non-Melibiose-Fermenting and Antibiotic-Resistance Properties

Etienne Bizot et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the detection and clinical diagnosis of Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O80:H2, and identify its unknown reservoir. The analysis of O80:H2 strains and comparison with non-O80 strains revealed a specific metabolic defect, which was utilized to develop a real-time PCR test and culture medium for detection. These new tools may improve the diagnosis of this atypical EHEC clone and enhance our understanding of its epidemiology.

Summary: The study identified EHEC O80:H2 in diarrhoeic and septicaemic calves in Belgium, which are genetically related to human EHEC. The findings support the need to assess cattle as a potential source of contamination of humans by EHEC O80:H2 and to understand the evolution of these bacteria.

Summary: This study identified and characterized 53 STEC strains with ExPEC-associated virulence genes isolated in Italy and the Netherlands from 2000 to 2019. The strains were divided into two major populations, each carrying different plasmids and virulence genes, indicating that ExPEC-associated plasmids can be acquired and mobilized by STEC strains.
