Efficacy of halofuginone products to prevent or treat cryptosporidiosis in bovine calves: a systematic review and meta-analyses

Julii Brainard et al.

Summary: The study found that halofuginone (HFG) treatment can significantly reduce oocyst shedding, diarrhea burden and mortality in calves, especially when treatment is initiated before calves reach 5 days of age. Most studies reported results for animals up to at least 28 days old, with beneficial effects observed after initiating HFG treatment.

Occurrence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in wild birds from Qinghai Lake on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China

Yingna Jian et al.

Summary: This study identified a variety of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis infections in wild birds from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, Northwest China, highlighting the potential public health significance of these parasites. The findings also provided valuable molecular epidemiological data for monitoring and investigating the two parasitic protozoa in wild animals and surrounding environments.

One health therapeutics: Target-Based drug development for cryptosporidiosis and other apicomplexa diseases

Wesley C. Van Voorhis et al.

Summary: The development of bumped-kinase inhibitors (BKIs) for the therapy of One Health parasitic apicomplexan diseases has shown promise in livestock models of cryptosporidiosis, toxoplasmosis, and neosporosis. Further improvements are needed to expand the potential uses of BKIs for the treatment of diseases caused by apicomplexan parasites in animals and humans.

An Update on Zoonotic Cryptosporidium Species and Genotypes in Humans

Una Ryan et al.

Summary: Cryptosporidium is a parasite that infects both humans and animals, with DNA-based detection and genetic typing methods being crucial for identifying and differentiating between species. Understanding zoonotic transmission is key for controlling the spread of this parasite, and molecular tools have greatly enhanced our knowledge of which Cryptosporidium species and genotypes can infect humans. Further studies and the widespread application of genetic tools are needed to advance our understanding of the zoonotic transmission and develop more effective control measures.

Current pharmacotherapy of cryptosporidiosis: an update of the state-of-the-art

Anne Schneider et al.

Summary: Cryptosporidiosis has become a major cause of diarrheal disease worldwide, with serious health consequences for young, malnourished children and individuals with impaired T-cell function. Current FDA-approved treatment is nitazoxanide, but it has shown limited effectiveness in HIV-positive patients, immunosuppressed individuals, and malnourished children. Developing new drugs targeting parasite kinases, nucleic acid synthesis, and other pathways may offer potential for more effective treatment options. Additionally, effective vaccination and preventive measures are crucial for reducing the global burden of cryptosporidiosis.

Assessment of Influential Factors for Scours Associated with Cryptosporidium sp., Rotavirus and Coronavirus in Calves from Argentinean Dairy Farms

Emiliano Bertoni et al.

Summary: Scours is a common disease in dairy calves in Salta, Argentina, with rotavirus and Cryptosporidium infections being major contributing factors. Specific farm management practices and certain factors such as herd size, calf age, and feeding practices were associated with higher odds of scours in dairy farms.
