Relationship between L-lactate dehydrogenase and multidrug resistance in Staphylococcus xylosus

Zhongwei Yuan et al.

Summary: The lack of LDH promotes multidrug resistance in S. xylosus by inhibiting the TCA cycle and regulating the thioredoxin system, leading to increased resistance to multiple antibiotics, especially lincomycin, as observed in experiments.

Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Prevalence of LA-MRSA in pigsties: analysis of factors influencing the (De)colonization process

Iris Kobusch et al.

Summary: Professional pig husbandry is often associated with a high prevalence of LA-MRSA. The study found that different housing conditions can affect the colonization of LA-MRSA in pig herds. Alternative farms showed a higher dynamic in colonization, while organic farms had almost no colonization. Factors such as the number of pigs, initial LA-MRSA status, floor material, black-white separation, and antibiotic treatment during the fattening period can determine the LA-MRSA status at the end of the cycle.

Characterisation of S. aureus/MRSA CC1153 and review of mobile genetic elements carrying the fusidic acid resistance gene fusC

Stefan Monecke et al.

Summary: In this study, a previously unknown MRSA lineage CC1153 from the Middle East, including strains from humans and livestock, was characterized. The CC1153 lineage carries specific genes and has been observed in multiple countries in the Middle East. The presence of fusidic acid-resistant MRSA poses a public health threat due to resistance to multiple antibiotics commonly used in both hospital and community settings.

Non-epidermidis coagulase-negative Staphylococcus isolated from farm animals can inhibit the hemagglutinating activity of Newcastle disease virus and bovine parainfluenza virus type 3

Miguel A. De la Rosa-Ramos et al.

Summary: The study found that supernatants of non-epidermidis CoNS from different animals have hemagglutination inhibition activity against Newcastle disease virus and bovine parainfluenza virus type 3, indicating that not only S. epidermidis, other CoNS species also have similar functions.

Extensive Horizontal Gene Transfer within and between Species of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus

Joshua T. Smith et al.

Summary: Members of the genus Staphylococcus have been historically classified into coagulase-positive and coagulase-negative based on the presence of the coagulase protein. While horizontal gene transfer has been well-studied in CoPS species like Staphylococcus aureus, this study sheds light on the importance of these processes in CoNS evolution. CoNS species serve as reservoirs of transferrable genes associated with antimicrobial resistance, with certain species acting as hubs of gene flow and genetic diversity for the entire genus.

Global Expansion of Linezolid-Resistant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci

Vladimir Gostev et al.

Summary: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) were historically considered non-pathogenic, but strains such as S. epidermidis, S. haemolyticus, and S. hominis have now been identified as opportunistic pathogens. The off-label use of linezolid for CoNS infections has led to the emergence of international linezolid-resistant lineages. Genetic analysis revealed the presence of common ancestors for linezolid-resistant strains in different countries.
