Omics Technologies-What Have They Told Us About Uropathogenic Escherichia coli Fitness and Virulence During Urinary Tract Infection?

Sergi Torres-Puig et al.

Summary: Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the main cause of urinary tract infection (UTI), and the increase in antibiotic resistance poses challenges for UTI treatment. The use of 'omics' technologies in studying UPEC has revealed numerous factors that contribute to UPEC's ability to cause disease. This review summarizes the findings of 'omics' studies on UPEC pathogenesis and discusses current and future challenges.

Close genetic linkage between human and companion animal extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli ST127

Paarthiphan Elankumaran et al.

Summary: Escherichia coli ST127 is a recently emerged global pathogen known for its high virulence gene carriage and is a leading cause of urinary tract and bloodstream infections. This study performed a phylogenomic analysis of diverse epidemiological origin ST127 isolates to characterize their population structure, virulence determinants, antimicrobial resistance, and plasmid repertoire. The results showed evidence of global transmission of ST127 lineages between humans and companion animals, particularly within a dominant cluster.

Molecular epidemiology of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing extra-intestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli strains over a 2-year period (2017-2019) from Zimbabwe

Faustinos Tatenda Takawira et al.

Summary: This study investigated ESBL-producing extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli associated with urinary tract infections in different regions of Zimbabwe from 2017 to 2019. The results showed ST131 and ST410 as the predominant resistant clones, with an increasing trend in ESBL-producing E. coli strains over time. The establishment and evolution of ESBL clones in Zimbabwe pose a significant public health threat, highlighting the importance of continuous monitoring and targeted control programs for specific STs, such as ST131 and ST410, to reduce the spread of ESBLs among ExPEC.

Epidemiology of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli from repeated prevalence studies over 11 years in a long-term-care facility

Romain Martischang et al.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of ESBL-EC belonging to the ST131 H30 subclone showed an increasing trend from 2010 to 2015, followed by a decline. Multiple unnoticed ESBL-EC outbreaks occurred in LTCFs, and clonal expansion of a rare ST131 H89 subclone was observed. Despite discontinuation of contact precautions for ESBL-EC carriers since 2019, no rebound effect was observed in ESBL-EC prevalence or different subclones.

Molecular epidemiology of blaCTX-M gene-producing uropathogenic Escherichia coli among Iranian kidney transplant patients: clonal dissemination of CC131 and CC10

Mehrdad Halaji et al.

Summary: This study investigated the phylogenetic characterization and virulence traits of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) isolated from kidney transplant patients (KTPs) and non-KTPs, as well as analyzed the clonal distribution of Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs)-producing UPEC with bla(CTX-M) gene. The results showed differences in virulence factor gene prevalence between KTPs and non-KTPs, with the most common UPEC phylogenetic groups being B-2, D, and A. Furthermore, MLST analysis identified 18 unique sequence types in ESBL-producing isolates, with ST131 being the most prevalent type.
