The global epidemiology of chikungunya from 1999 to 2020: A systematic literature review to inform the development and introduction of vaccines

Alison Bettis et al.

Summary: Chikungunya fever is a global public health issue caused by a mosquito-borne virus. There is a lack of comprehensive epidemiological knowledge, including challenges for vaccine trials and understanding of long-term population immunity. Further research is crucial for vaccine development.

Clustered rapid induction of apoptosis limits ZIKV and DENV-2 proliferation in the midguts of Aedes aegypti

Jasmine B. Ayers et al.

Summary: Ayers et al. found rapid induction of apoptosis in the midgut of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes within 2 hours of infection by dengue and Zika viruses, and inhibiting apoptosis led to increased virus proliferation in the midgut, suggesting rapid induction of apoptosis as an innate immune mechanism mediating midgut infection in this mosquito vector.

Mosquito antiviral immune pathways

Chinmay V. Tikhe et al.

Summary: Mosquitoes are vectors of numerous viral pathogens, and controlling mosquito-borne viral diseases is challenging due to the lack of effective medical interventions. Understanding the interactions between the mosquito immune system and viruses is crucial for developing effective control strategies.

Transcriptome Analysis of Responses to Dengue Virus 2 Infection in Aedes albopictus (Skuse) C6/36 Cells

Manjin Li et al.

Summary: RNA-Seq analysis of Aedes albopictus C6/36 cells infected with dengue virus revealed 1239 differentially expressed genes, with 1133 upregulated and 106 downregulated. Bioinformatics analysis showed upregulated genes were significantly enriched in multiple signaling pathways and metabolic processes, while downregulated genes were mainly involved in DNA replication and repair pathways. qRT-PCR results demonstrated a high concordance of 92.3% between RNA-Seq and RT-qPCR data.

Imd pathway-specific immune assays reveal NF-κB stimulation by viral RNA PAMPs in Aedes aegypti Aag2 cells

Tiffany A. Russell et al.

Summary: This study found that a specific arm of the mosquito immune system can detect the RNA of mosquito-borne viruses, which could inform the development of transmission-incompetent mosquitoes. Another arm of the immune system, however, was found to be nonfunctional under all experimental conditions used in the study. These findings provide new insights for the development of transgenic mosquitoes to reduce arbovirus transmission, especially in the absence of antiviral therapies and effective vaccines.
