Sensitive control of broad-area semiconductor lasers by cavity shape

Kyungduk Kim et al.

Summary: The ray dynamics of optical cavities exhibit bifurcation points, where ray trajectories switch abruptly between stable and unstable. Experimental results show that a slight deviation from these bifurcation points dramatically changes the laser performance. By using a near-planar cavity with concave mirrors, the number of transverse lasing modes increases drastically, leading to improved stability in spatiotemporal lasing dynamics.

Spatial tomography of light resolved in time, spectrum, and polarisation

Martin Ploschner et al.

Summary: Measuring the polarization, spectrum, temporal dynamics, and spatial complex amplitude of optical beams is crucial for studying laser dynamics, telecommunications, and nonlinear optics. Current characterization techniques have limitations in certain contexts. This article introduces a method called spatial state tomography that overcomes these limitations and provides a complete description of an unknown beam by measuring spectrally, temporally, and polarization resolved spatial state density matrices. The method is demonstrated by characterizing the output of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser.

Chaotic microlasers caused by internal mode interaction for random number generation

Chun-Guang Ma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the first self-chaotic microlaser based on internal mode interaction, achieving self-chaos and period oscillations by adjusting the mode frequency interval. It provides a novel mode engineering method for the nonlinear dynamics of lasers.

Massively parallel ultrafast random bit generation with a chip-scale laser

Kyungduk Kim et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method for ultrafast generation of random bit streams using a single laser diode, achieving a total bit rate of 250 terabits per second with off-line postprocessing. The approach is robust, compact, energy-efficient, and has potential applications in secure communication and high-performance computation.

Boosting the output power of large-aperture lasers by breaking their circular symmetry

A. Brejnak et al.

Summary: Breaking spatial symmetry in optical systems is crucial for studying nonlinear dynamics, wave chaos, and non-Hermitian physics. Intentionally deforming optical apertures can enhance light output power and quantum efficiency in lasers, providing a robust method for increasing emitted power in high-power lasers. This study demonstrates the importance of breaking symmetry in optical systems for enhancing laser emission.

A complete, parallel and autonomous photonic neural network in a semiconductor multimode laser

Xavier Porte et al.

Summary: Neural networks differ fundamentally from classical algorithmic computing, posing significant challenges for current computing substrates. They require parallelism across the entire processor and a co-location of memory and arithmetic, beyond traditional architectures. By spatially multiplexing neurons across the optical near-field of a semiconductor multimode laser, we demonstrate the realization of a fully parallel and fully implemented photonic neural network for the first time.
