Understanding the host-microbe-environment interactions: Intestinal microbiota and transcriptomes of black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon at different salinity levels

Sage Chaiyapechara et al.

Summary: The salinity of the rearing environment can affect the gut microbiota and transcriptomes of shrimp, leading to changes in the abundance of specific bacterial genera and the expression of genes related to stress and immune responses. Understanding these effects is crucial for the development of disease control strategies in shrimp aquaculture.

Prebiotics modify host metabolism in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed with a total plant-based diet: Potential implications for microbiome-mediated diet optimization

Jep Lokesh et al.

Summary: The use of plant-based ingredients in aquafeeds is increasing due to the unsustainability of marine sources of protein and oil. This study investigated the potential of prebiotics to impact the metabolism of rainbow trout and found that inulin may have a significant effect on the intestinal microbiome and metabolic responses in various organs.

Prebiotics enhance the biotransformation and bioavailability of ginsenosides in rats by modulating gut microbiota

Xiaoyan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that modulation of gut microbiota through prebiotics can increase the concentration of ginsenosides and their metabolites in vivo, thereby improving their bioavailability. Prebiotic treatment has a significant impact on the classification and function of gut microbiota, promoting the proliferation of specific bacterial strains with glycoside hydrolysis capacity to enhance the biotransformation and bioavailability of ginsenosides.

Summary: Through transcriptomic analysis of two L. vannamei cultivars under different temperatures, key DEGs were identified in the cold-tolerant GH2 cultivar, with significant enrichment of KEGG pathways. Furthermore, validation of eight significantly DEGs under cold stress using qPCR provides further insight into the cold stress-response mechanism of L. vannamei.

Synbiotic combination of prebiotic, cacao pod husk pectin and probiotic, Lactobacillus plantarum, improve the immunocompetence and growth of Litopenaeus vannamei

Hsin-Wei Kuo et al.

Summary: The study found that the synbiotic combination of CPH pectin and LP significantly improved weight gain, length gains, feeding efficiency, and immune function in Litopenaeus vannamei. Shrimp fed with the synbiotics showed increased total haemocyte count, phenoloxidase activity, and respiratory bursts, as well as enhanced phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency in response to pathogen challenge. Additionally, shrimp receiving CPH pectin and/or LP treatments exhibited higher survival rates against infection and stress, indicating the immunostimulant effects of the additives.

Synergic degradation of yeast β-glucan with a potential of immunostimulant and growth promotor for tiger shrimp

Le Quang Luan et al.

Summary: The synergic effect of gamma-irradiation and hydrogen peroxide was used to prepare water-soluble and low molecular weight beta-glucan, which showed significant effects on body weight and survival rate of Penaeus monodon shrimps challenged with Vibrio parahaemolyticus and White spot syndrome virus. The 15 kDa-oligo beta-glucan also stimulated immune factors and gene expressions, leading to increased survival rates of shrimps post infection. These results indicate a promising potential for the application of the water-soluble oligo beta-glucan in shrimp culture as a natural growth promoter and immunostimulant.

Bifidobacterium response to lactulose ingestion in the gut relies on a solute-binding protein-dependent ABC transporter

Keisuke Yoshida et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of Bifidobacterium to lactulose ingestion in healthy Japanese subjects, focusing on a lactulose transporter. The results showed a correlation between the abundance of specific genes and the increase in Bifidobacterium after lactulose ingestion, suggesting different thresholds for responders and non-responders to lactulose. These findings could help predict who will respond positively to prebiotics and guide clinical interventions testing the efficacy of prebiotics.
