Comprehensive traditional East Asian medicine treatment strategy for obesity considering the therapeutic effects and adverse events A protocol for systematic review and network meta-analysis

Hongmin Chu et al.

Summary: Obesity is a serious global health problem, and traditional East Asian medicine is considered as an alternative therapy. This study aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of traditional East Asian medicine in obesity treatment. The study will provide high-quality systematic reviews and evidence on comparative efficacy and safety.

Uncoupling Protein 1 Does Not Produce Heat without Activation

Yongguo Li et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is crucial for heat production in brown and beige fat. However, UCP1 is constitutively inhibited and inherently inactive without activation. Simply increasing UCP1 abundance does not result in automatic increase in thermogenesis. Understanding the controls of UCP1 activity is important for therapeutic interventions to unlock the energy-expending potential of brown fat.

A national survey on current clinical practice pattern of Korean Medicine doctors for treating obesity

Kyung Hwan Jegal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the current practice patterns of Korean medicine (KM) treatment for obesity among doctors. The results showed that patients with Obesity Class I were the most common in KM clinics, and bioelectric impedance and KM Obesity Pattern Identification Questionnaire were routinely used for diagnosis. Herbal medicine was the most commonly used treatment method, with Taeeumjowui-tang being the most frequently prescribed. Ephedrae Herba was identified as the most used herb for weight loss. The study also found that a considerable number of patients experienced uncomfortable symptoms due to the use of Ephedrae Herba.

The Role of AMPK Signaling in Brown Adipose Tissue Activation

Jamie I. van der Vaart et al.

Summary: Obesity is on the rise and research is focusing on new ways to combat it, with a particular interest in targeting brown adipose tissue (BAT) and AMPK to increase energy expenditure and regulate energy balance. AMPK can be activated by various kinases, hormones, and metabolic stresses to activate BAT, but further research is needed before using it as a target for anti-obesity treatment.

Management of Oxidative Stress: Crosstalk Between Brown/Beige Adipose Tissues and Skeletal Muscles

Ruping Pan et al.

Summary: Exercise plays a critical role in regulating oxidative metabolism, influencing ROS levels and mitigating oxidative stress. Proper exercise can help reduce ROS levels, especially in pathological conditions. Beige and brown adipose tissues are key players in this process, contributing to metabolic balance and protection against oxidative stress.

Nrf2 induces Ucp1 expression in adipocytes in response to β3-AR stimulation and enhances oxygen consumption in high-fat diet-fed obese mice

Seo-Hyuk Chang et al.

Summary: Research demonstrates that stimulation of beta 3-adrenergic receptors (beta 3-AR) in adipocytes can increase the expression of Ucp1 and Hmox1, indicating a functional interaction between Nrf2 and beta 3-AR signaling. Nrf2 directly activates the Ucp1 promoter and inhibiting Nrf2 results in decreased expression of Ucp1 and Hmox1.
