Dexamethasone Administration in Mice Leads to Less Body Weight Gain over Time, Lower Serum Glucose, and Higher Insulin Levels Independently of NRF2

Fotini Filippopoulou et al.

Summary: Glucocorticoids are widely used in the long-term treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. However, they can have adverse effects such as hyperglycemia and osteoporosis, which are partially mediated by oxidative stress. This study found that glucocorticoid-induced hyperinsulinemia and osteoporosis are independent of NRF2.

Oxidized lipid-associated protein damage in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus: New diagnostic/prognostic clinical markers

Eirini Kostopoulou et al.

Summary: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) is associated with oxidative stress (OS), which plays a key role in the disease's onset and progression. This study found that markers of OS, LOOH, PrMDA, and PrTBARS, were significantly higher in children and adolescents with DM1 compared to controls, suggesting they could serve as potential diagnostic markers for OS in this population.

Dimming the Powerhouse: Mitochondrial Dysfunction in the Liver and Skeletal Muscle of Intrauterine Growth Restricted Fetuses

Alexander L. Pendleton et al.

Summary: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) caused by placental insufficiency (PI) leads to low oxygen and nutrient levels in the fetus, affecting metabolic function in skeletal muscle and liver. Mitochondrial adaptations in response to nutrient restriction in IUGR fetuses may ensure survival, but could also predispose them to metabolic diseases later in life. Understanding the impact of oxygen and substrate deficiencies on skeletal muscle and liver metabolism is crucial for preventing metabolic dysfunction.

Mid-pregnancy maternal immune activation increases Pax6-positive and Tbr2-positive neural progenitor cells and causes integrated stress response in the fetal brain in a mouse model of maternal viral infection

Tsuyoshi Tsukada et al.

Summary: The study found that intraperitoneal injection of poly(I:C) at E12.5 may lead to dysregulated neurogenesis and upregulation of Atf4 in the fetal brain. These findings provide a new insight into the mechanism of MIA causing improper brain development and subsequent neurodevelopmental disorders.
