Size-Dependent Cytoprotective Effects of Selenium Nanoparticles during Oxygen-Glucose Deprivation in Brain Cortical Cells

Summary: Research has shown that selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have a diverse effect on brain cells, protecting them under conditions of oxygen-glucose deprivation and reoxygenation. Different-sized SeNPs activate astrocyte Ca2+ signaling in varying ways, which explains their cytoprotective efficacy. In terms of efficiency under such conditions, the SeNPs can be ordered from greatest to least in size: 100 nm-sized > 400 nm-sized > 50 nm-sized.
