Follicular fluid extracellular vesicle miRNAs and ovarian aging

Summary: The decrease in reproductive potential with aging is attributed to the gradual decline in quantity and quality of ovarian reserve, which increases the risk of miscarriage, pregnancy loss, low ovarian stimulation, and oocyte abnormalities. Changes in cellular composition of follicles have been shown to contribute to the reduced fertility potential of older women. Moreover, extracellular vesicles (EVs), especially non-coding RNAs like miRNAs, have been found to play a role in cellular communication and their composition has been documented to alter with age, suggesting their potential as predictors of oocyte quality.
