Emerging roles and functional mechanisms of PIWI-interacting RNAs

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are important small non-coding RNAs that play crucial roles in germ line development through silencing transposable elements and regulating protein-coding genes. Recent studies have advanced our understanding of piRNA biogenesis and function, and highlighted their significance in human infertility, cancer, and neurological diseases.

MITOCHONDRIAL CALCIUM EXCHANGE IN PHYSIOLOGY AND DISEASE

Joanne F. Garbincius et al.

Summary: The uptake and extrusion of calcium into and from the mitochondrial matrix have significant effects on cellular metabolism, signaling, and survival. Disruption of mitochondrial calcium cycling is associated with various diseases and inherited neuromuscular disorders. This review provides an overview of the molecular machinery involved in calcium flux across the inner mitochondrial membrane and discusses the physiological implications and potential therapeutic interventions for diseases characterized by aberrant calcium handling. Critical unanswered questions regarding the biology of calcium flux are also highlighted.

Unraveling mitochondrial piRNAs in mouse embryonic gonadal cells

Odei Barrenada et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that mitochondrial small noncoding RNAs (sncRNAs) play important roles in germ cell development and differentiation. By analyzing sequencing data, we identified the origins, expression levels, and potential functions of piRNAs, as well as their association with other sncRNAs and the mitochondrial regulatory region. Our findings suggest that mitochondria-associated piRNAs may mediate nucleo-mitochondrial communication.

VDAC1 promotes cardiomyocyte autophagy in anoxia/reoxygenation injury via the PINK1/Parkin pathway

Xiaomei Yang et al.

Summary: Research has shown that VDAC1 plays a role in mediating cellular damage during myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury by activating autophagy and affecting mitochondrial function and apoptosis. Knockdown of VDAC1 can alleviate cell damage, and A/R injury also activates the PINK1/Parkin autophagic pathway.
