The Ongoing Journey of a Shigella Bioconjugate Vaccine

Patricia Martin et al.

Summary: Shigellosis is a serious disease that has a significant impact, especially in low-income countries. It not only causes high mortality and morbidity, but also contributes to the increase in antimicrobial resistance among travelers and military personnel. Developing a Shigella vaccine is a priority for public health, but previous efforts have been unsuccessful. Bioconjugation technology offers a promising approach for the development of a Shigella vaccine.

Michele Costanzo et al.

Summary: The aim of this review article is to provide an overview of the current knowledge about prophylaxis achievements in the fight against Coronaviruses. The article summarizes the recent literature on vaccines effective against the most pathogenic Coronaviruses and focuses on the development and use of vaccines in combating the COVID-19 pandemic. The main objective is to understand the molecular level of anti-SARS-CoV-2 prophylactic intervention and provide an overall picture of innovative approaches for vaccine development against the most pathogenic Coronaviruses.

Single nephron glomerular filtration rate measured by linescan multiphoton microscopy compared to conventional micropuncture

Vincenzo Costanzo et al.

Summary: Renal micropuncture has been the choice for measuring SNGFR in animal models, but it is challenging due to complex preparation. Intravital multiphoton microscopy offers another approach with improved resolution. This study presents an innovative linescan-based method that can accurately measure SNGFR in rats and mice.

The Probe for Renal Organic Cation Secretion (4-Dimethylaminostyryl)-N-Methylpyridinium (ASP plus )) Shows Amplified Fluorescence by Binding to Albumin and Is Accumulated In Vivo

Jacob Schade Engbjerg et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of ASP+ tracer using fluorescence and PET imaging. The results showed that ASP+ injection produced a fluorescence signal in blood plasma for about 30 minutes and a complex fluorescence pattern in the renal proximal tubule. PET imaging revealed accumulation of ASP+ in the liver, heart, and kidney. The presence of albumin influenced the fluorescence signal of ASP+.

Safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of a Clostridioides difficile toxoid vaccine candidate: a phase 3 multicentre, observer-blind, randomised, controlled trial

Guy de Bruyn et al.

Summary: A phase 3 multicentre, observer-blind, randomised, controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy, immunogenicity, and safety of a toxoid vaccine candidate for Clostridioides difficile infection. However, the study was terminated after showing that the bivalent C difficile toxoid vaccine did not prevent C difficile infection, leading to the discontinuation of its clinical development.

The role of vaccines in combatting antimicrobial resistance

MTBVAC, a live TB vaccine poised to initiate efficacy trials 100 years after BCG

Carlos Martin et al.

Summary: BCG has been a key inspiration for the development of numerous new TB vaccine candidates, with MTBVAC as one of them. MTBVAC, based on a live-attenuated Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolate, is set to begin Phase 3 efficacy trials in TB-endemic countries. Recent studies suggest that MTBVAC can induce trained immunity and confer non-specific heterologous protection similar to BCG, showing promising potential for long-term TB eradication programs.
