Deep Eutectic Solvent-A Novel Additive to Induce Gamma Crystallization and Alpha-to-Gamma Phase Transition of PVDF

Muhua Yuan et al.

Summary: This study introduces an environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvent (DES) to induce crystallization of polar phases and accelerate the alpha-to-gamma phase transition in PVDF. The presence of DES results in over 90% gamma(gamma')-phase crystals in the PVDF/DES composite with only 1 wt% DES, due to the ion-dipole interaction between PVDF and the hydrogen bond acceptor in DES.

Recent advances in electrospinning of nanofibers from bio-based carbohydrate polymers and their applications

Nicole Angel et al.

Summary: This review discusses the basic principles and variations of electrospinning, and explores electrospun fibers made from polysaccharides in detail. Methods to improve the electrospinnability of polysaccharides are also introduced. Electrospun fibers can be tailored for specific functions through optimization of the electrospinning process and spinning dope. Increasing fiber production rate and improving electrospinnability of polysaccharides are crucial for scaling up the electrospinning process. Biopolymer fibers show high potential in the field of biomedical applications due to their biodegradability and compatibility properties.

Vimentin: Regulation and pathogenesis

Denise Paulin et al.

Summary: Vimentin, an abundant cytoplasmic intermediate filament protein, plays important roles in stabilizing intracellular structure, cell plasticity, and signaling regulation. It can also be found outside the cell, exhibiting novel functions such as secretion, cell surface presence, and involvement in viral entry. The expression of vimentin is regulated by a complex network of promoter elements and epigenetic mechanisms.

Electrospun 1D and 2D Carbon and Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) Piezoelectric Nanocomposites

Hang Song et al.

Summary: Piezoelectric nanocomposite fibrous membranes consisting of PVDF, CNTs, and GO were prepared. The addition of CNT and GO reduced the crystallinity and beta phase content of PVDF, but CNT had a positive impact on the piezoelectric coefficient d(33) due to increased conductivity and orientation of beta crystals. The study is important for the development of PVDF nanocomposites in piezoelectric energy harvesting applications.

Polarization Mechanism Underlying Strongly Enhanced Dielectric Permittivity in Polymer Composites with Conductive Fillers

Bo Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the dielectric response of a composite material consisting of ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer and carbon black nanofillers. It reveals that the dielectric relaxation is primarily determined by electron displacement within carbon black clusters, contradicting widely assumed interfacial polarization mechanisms. The dielectric response of the composites can be quantitatively correlated with the morphology of the carbon black clusters via a set of scaling laws.

Atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge containing helium-air mixtures: the effect of dry air impurities on the spatial discharge behavior

Qiao Wang et al.

Summary: Air is a typical and arguably unavoidable impurity in atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) and significantly influences the discharge characteristics through the plasma chemical effects. With an increase in air impurity level, the DBD experiences three different spatial modes: uniform, columnar, and complementary quasi-uniform modes, due to progressively enhanced Penning ionization.
