Reproducing the Biomechanical Environment of the Chondrocyte for Cartilage Tissue Engineering

Patrick Statham et al.

Summary: The biomechanical and tribological performance of articular cartilage is closely linked to its extracellular matrix structure and zonal heterogeneity. Chondrocyte metabolism is related to the extracellular mechanical environment, with the pericellular matrix playing a key role in mechanotransduction and metabolism. Tuning material properties of a scaffold or using external cyclic loading can induce biosynthetic responses in chondrocytes, leading to potential applications in tissue engineering for regenerating articular cartilage with appropriate biomechanical properties.

Regulatory network-based model to simulate the biochemical regulation of chondrocytes in healthy and osteoarthritic environments

Maria Segarra-Queralt et al.

Summary: This study proposes a network-based model at the chondrocyte level to explain the complex mechanisms of osteoarthritis progression. By analyzing literature and enriching the network, we obtained a molecular interaction network that represents chondrocyte activity and accurately predicts the outcomes of OA treatment based on experimental data.

Targeting calcium-related mechanotransduction in early OA

Michelle L. Delco et al.

Summary: Mechanical stimuli sensation by chondrocytes is crucial for cartilage homeostasis and osteoarthritis development. The early responses in chondrocyte mechanotransduction pathways involve calcium influx and changes in mitochondrial function, which occur within seconds to minutes. Understanding these events can reveal new therapeutic targets for early intervention to prevent osteoarthritis.
