Evaluation of injectable nucleus augmentation materials for the treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration

Matthew P. Culbert et al.

Summary: Back pain can affect health and mobility, and nucleus augmentation aims to restore the intervertebral disc to its healthy state through minimally invasive methods. Injectable hydrogels are commonly used materials for nucleus augmentation, and the mechanical properties and biological compatibility of these materials are important factors to consider in their development.

Ligament mechanics of ageing and osteoarthritic human knees

Abby E. Peters et al.

Summary: This study collates data on the material properties of the four major knee ligaments in humans and investigates the influence of age and osteoarthritis (OA) on these properties. The results show significant negative correlations between age/OA and certain ligament mechanical properties. This research contributes to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of knee joint diseases.

Review of in vitro mechanical testing for intervertebral disc injectable biomaterials

A. R. Dixon et al.

Summary: This review examined various methods for mechanically testing injectable intervertebral disc biomaterials in an in vitro disc model, focusing on protocol, degeneration method, testing regime and injection delivery. The studies showed diverse testing protocols and mechanical loading regimes, with different effects on device performance evaluation. More work is needed to standardize testing parameters and delivery methods for future intervertebral disc mechanical testing.

Functional and structural properties of human patellar articular cartilage in osteoarthritis

Mikko T. Nissinen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the changes in fibril-reinforced poroelastic material parameters of human patellar cartilage at different stages of osteoarthritis. It found significant differences in these parameters and their associations with proteoglycan content, collagen fibril orientation angle, and optical retardation. Additionally, reductions in the initial fibril network modulus and permeability were observed in advanced osteoarthritis samples, showing correlations with structural and functional changes in the cartilage.
