Progresses and future prospects in biodegradation of marine biopolymers and emerging biopolymer-based materials for sustainable marine ecosystems

Francois Samalens et al.

Summary: The ocean is an abundant source of biodiversity and natural polymers, which have attracted attention from both scientists and industries due to their renewable nature and appealing properties. These marine biopolymers offer opportunities for the development of bio-based materials and the reduction of plastic pollution in marine ecosystems. However, the biodegradation processes of marine biopolymers and biopolymer-based materials in the marine environment still require further investigation.

Control of the molecular permeability of polysaccharide composite films utilizing a molecular imprinting approach

Takuya Sagawa et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the fabrication of polyion complex (PICs) films using hot press techniques and the molecular imprinting of methylene blue (MB). The molecular permeability of the films was evaluated using charged permeants. The results indicate that molecularly imprinted films have better permeability compared to nonimprinted films.

Self-glucose feeding hydrogels by enzyme empowered degradation for 3D cell culture

Mehrzad Zargarzadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, a cell culture support system using enzymes immobilized in hydrogels was developed to generate glucose in situ from hydrogel degradation, promoting cell survival and tissue growth. The laminaran-based hydrogels provided glucose for metabolic activity in 3D cell culture, showing high potential in cell survival compared to native cell-laden laminaran hydrogels. This self-feeding hydrogel system opens up possibilities for applications in tissue regeneration, biofactories, disease models, and cell delivery systems.

Electrospinning based on benign solvents: current definitions, implications and strategies

Joshua Avossa et al.

Summary: Electrospinning is a powerful technology for producing membranes with unique properties. However, the commonly used solvents in this technology are halogenated and toxic, which are now restricted in the European Union. To make electrospinning more commercially viable and environmentally friendly, alternative solvents and green approaches need to be established. This review provides an overview of the current ecological and economical context of electrospinning and summarizes recent approaches towards green electrospinning.
