Laser welding of a W-free precipitation strengthened Co-base superalloy

K. S. Athira et al.

Summary: A new class of W-free, precipitation strengthened Co-base superalloys has been developed, which has improved high-temperature strength and excellent oxidation and hot corrosion resistance. This study investigates the impact of fusion welding on the microstructure and properties of a specific alloy in this class and finds that the welding-induced microstructural changes can be restored by a post-weld solutionizing-aging treatment.

Laser-based directed energy deposition (DED-LB) of advanced materials

David Svetlizky et al.

Summary: Directed energy deposition (DED) has become an important branch of additive manufacturing (AM) and is widely used in the design and fabrication of various materials. Successful DED operation requires a good understanding of critical phenomena such as laser-material interactions, alloy solidification, welding metallurgy, and microstructure-mechanical properties relations. This comprehensive review focuses on materials design via DED, including a survey of different compositions and highlights the challenges and opportunities in this area.

Microstructure Evolution and Tensile Properties of a Selectively Laser Melted CoNi-Base Superalloy

Sean P. Murray et al.

Summary: A high gamma' volume fraction CoNi-base superalloy with roughly equal amounts of cobalt and nickel was successfully processed through selective laser melting. Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties were studied after various heat treatments. It was found that super-solvus solution heat treatment improved the grain structure while degrading elevated temperature ductility. Post-processing involving sub-solvus hot isostatic pressing, solution heat treatment, and aging improved the mechanical properties of the alloy.

On the role of boron, carbon and zirconium on hot cracking and creep resistance of an additively manufactured polycrystalline superalloy

Arthur Despres et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between hot cracking susceptibility and creep resistance in a nickel-based superalloy with different contents of boron, carbon and zirconium. By analyzing the distribution of these elements at grain boundaries, the research reveals the importance of alloy design guidelines for achieving both crack-free fabrication and required creep performance after heat-treatment. The presence or absence of specific elements at grain boundaries plays a crucial role in determining the alloy's properties.
