Large-scale metal additive manufacturing: a holistic review of the state of the art and challenges

Thomas Lehmann et al.

Summary: Additive Manufacturing (AM) through robotic systems and direct energy deposition techniques provides a new way of production for large-scale parts, allowing for flexible sizing from sub-metre to multi-metre. The technology not only eliminates geometric constraints but also significantly reduces lead time for parts delivery. The research covers various aspects from materials, microstructures to robotic build platforms and post-processing steps.

Additive manufacturing of in-situ strengthened dual-phase AlCoCuFeNi high-entropy alloy by selective electron beam melting

Mina Zhang et al.

Summary: The application scope and market demand for additive-manufactured high-entropy alloys (AM HEAs) have broadened of late. A dual-phase AlCoCuFeNi HEA was fabricated by selective electron beam melting (SEBM) with superior compressive strength and ductility. Further improvements were achieved using selective electron beam remelting (SEB-RM) during SEBM, resulting in better compressive properties.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of WMoTaNbTi refractory high-entropy alloys fabricated by selective electron beam melting

Bang Xiao et al.

Summary: WMoTaNbTi RHEAs formed by SEBM with negative defocus distance were studied. The results show that the decrease in scanning speed leads to vaporization of Nb and Ti elements, weakening the solid-solute strengthening and reducing the content of Nb and Ti solutes in the matrix, resulting in improved ductility and decreased microhardness. The as-deposited WMoTaNbTi RHEA formed at a scanning speed of 2.5 m/s exhibits high ultimate strength.

Powder plasma arc additive manufactured CoCrFeNi(SiC)x high-entropy alloys: Microstructure and mechanical properties

Qingkai Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, powder plasma arc additive manufacturing (PPA-AM) was used for the first time to fabricate CoCrFeNi(SiC)(x) (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5) HEAs. It was found that with increasing of SiC content, the microstructure of CoCrFeNi(SiC)(x) HEAs changed, leading to significant improvements in both hardness and yield strength. The main strengthening mechanism of the HEAs was identified as solid-solution and second phase strengthening.
