Mucin secretory action of capsaicin prevents high fat diet-induced gut barrier dysfunction in C57BL/6 mice colon

Vijay Kumar et al.

Summary: The study found that taking capsaicin and mucin had similar anti-obesity effects, indicating that mucin modulation might play a crucial role in the anti-obesity effects of capsaicin. 16S rDNA sequencing and in vitro Ca2+ measurement experiments suggested that bacteria, in addition to capsaicin, are involved in TRPV1 modulation.

The Prebiotic Potential of Inulin-Type Fructans: A Systematic Review

Riley L. Hughes et al.

Summary: This comprehensive review examines the prebiotic effects of inulin-type fructans (ITF) on the intestinal microbiota and health in healthy human adults. The review finds that ITF promote the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, and have positive effects on intestinal barrier function, laxation, insulin sensitivity, lipid profile, mineral absorption, and satiety. However, there is a lack of discussion on the effects of ITF chain length and individual factors on its efficacy.

Identification of new enterosynes using prebiotics: roles of bioactive lipids and mu-opioid receptor signalling in humans and mice

Anne Abot et al.

Summary: Modulating gut microbiota with prebiotics can alter the actions of enteric neurons, thereby controlling duodenal contraction and attenuating hyperglycemia in diabetic mice. New enterosynes, such as enkephalin and 12-HETE, were identified with potential beneficial and safe impact in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Intestinal α1-2-Fucosylation Contributes to Obesity and Steatohepatitis in Mice

Rongrong Zhou et al.

Summary: Fut2 plays a key role in the pathogenesis of obesity and steatohepatitis, with Fut2-deficient mice being protected from Western diet-induced features. Protection from these diseases is associated with increased energy expenditure and thermogenesis in Fut2-deficient mice, and can be transmitted to WT mice via microbiota exchange.

The effects of diet and gut microbiota on the regulation of intestinal mucin glycosylation

Dingwu Qu et al.

Summary: The review discusses the regulation of intestinal mucins glycosylation by host cues and environmental signals, particularly from the microbiome and diets. It summarizes the dynamic alterations of mucin glycosylation induced by immune responses to gut diseases and identifies mechanisms of how dietary components affect intestinal mucin glycosylation and maintain mucosal homeostasis. The review also proposes a potential framework for individualized dietary recommendations to prevent abnormal mucin glycosylation driven by immune dysregulation, gut microbiome alterations, and other factors.

Identification of Allobaculum mucolyticum as a novel human intestinal mucin degrader

Guus H. van Muijlwijk et al.

Summary: The human gut microbiota plays a key role in intestinal health and disease, with some bacteria linked to human diseases exploiting the inner mucus layer as an important niche. A newly identified IBD-associated species, Allobaculum mucolyticum, was found to carry up to 60 genes encoding putative Carbohydrate Active Enzymes (CAZymes) that may contribute to mucosal colonization. Mass spectrometry revealed the presence of 49 CAZymes, with 26 significantly enriched in its secretome, suggesting that A. mucolyticum's CAZyme secretion may facilitate bacterial colonization and degradation of the mucus layer.
