Gut microbiota modulates COPD pathogenesis: role of anti-inflammatory Parabacteroides goldsteinii lipopolysaccharide

Hsin-Chih Lai et al.

Summary: The study found that gut microbiota composition significantly affects cigarette smoking-induced COPD development, and fecal microbiota transplantation can restore COPD pathogenesis. A beneficial bacterium Parabacteroides goldsteinii was isolated and shown to ameliorate COPD, with its derived active component having anti-inflammatory effects and ameliorating COPD through inhibition of lung inflammation and regulation of host metabolism.

Intestinal Inflammation and Alterations in the Gut Microbiota in Cystic Fibrosis: A Review of the Current Evidence, Pathophysiology and Future Directions

Rachel Y. Tam et al.

Summary: Cystic fibrosis is a life-limiting disease that affects multiple systems in the body. While it is commonly associated with pulmonary disease, it also has significant impacts on the gastrointestinal tract, including chronic inflammation and changes in the gut microbiota. These GI manifestations have clinical associations with growth, nutrition, quality of life, and respiratory function in cystic fibrosis patients.

The Gut-Lung Axis in Cystic Fibrosis

Courtney E. Price et al.

Summary: Cystic fibrosis is a heritable multiorgan disease that affects tissues expressing the CFTR protein. Recent research has highlighted the crucial role of intestinal microbiota in the gut-lung axis for individuals with CF. Current literature focuses on understanding microbial influences, drivers of microbiota alterations, and the potential for intestinal microbiota remediation in the context of CF.
