Strategies for Electrochemically Sustainable H2 Production in Acid

Yuxi Hou et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of acidified water electrolysis for systematic investigations of sustainable hydrogen production (SHP). The main challenge is the poor stability of electrode catalysts under strongly acidic and highly polarized electrochemical environments. Efforts have been made to tune the atomic/nano structures of catalysts, but with limited effectiveness. A systems approach considering reaction types and system configurations/operations may provide innovative viewpoints and strategies for SHP.

Ruthenium Core-Shell Engineering with Nickel Single Atoms for Selective Oxygen Evolution via Nondestructive Mechanism

Ahmad M. Harzandi et al.

Summary: Understanding the sluggish and destructive mechanism of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for the development of effective electrocatalytic splitting of acidic water. Catalysts composed of metallic Ru-core, oxidized Ru-shell, and Ni single atoms show enhanced activity and stability, providing current density and sustaining water oxidation in strongly acidic media. The designed catalysts follow distinctive acid-base (AB) and direct-coupling (DC) lattice oxygen mechanisms (LOMs) and adsorbates evolution mechanism (AEM) depending on surface-defect engineering conditions.

Zongshan Lin et al.

Summary: This study reports a facile method to prepare Ru-based aerogels for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and water electrolysis. Ru aerogel shows comparable performance with Pt/C for HER, while Ru0.7Co0.3 aerogel exhibits superior OER performance. The combined Ru and Ru0.7Co0.3 aerogel catalyst outperforms the Pt/C + RuO2 couple in practical overall water splitting test.

Laszlo Peter et al.

Summary: This study determined the structural parameters of electrodeposited Ni-Mo alloys using X-ray line profile analysis, investigating the effects of Mo concentration on crystallite size, twin fault probability, and dislocation density. It was found that increasing Mo content led to decreased crystallite size and increased defect density, but the formation of defect structure was found to be influenced by multiple factors, not just Mo content.
