Estimating temperatures of heated Lower Palaeolithic flint artefacts

Aviad Agam et al.

Summary: This study used Raman spectroscopy and machine learning to build temperature-estimation models to infer the level of pyro-technological control by inhabitants of the Qesem Cave in Israel during the late Lower Palaeolithic period. The results showed that blades were heated at lower temperatures compared to flakes, while heat-induced structural flint damage appeared at 447 degrees Celsius. These findings suggest a differential behavior in selective tool production by Levantine hominins over 300,000 years ago.

A neanderthal hunting camp in the central system of the Iberian Peninsula: A zooarchaeological and taphonomic analysis of the Navalmaillo Rock Shelter (Pinilla del Valle, Spain)

Abel Moclan et al.

Summary: This study examined the faunal remains of the Navalmaillo Rock Shelter in Madrid, Spain, and concluded that it was a Neanderthal hunting camp with short-term occupations. The main agents responsible for the accumulation of faunal remains were Neanderthals, primarily of large bovids and to a lesser extent medium-sized cervids. Carnivores were also identified as having activity at the site, feeding on small prey or scavenging carcasses left by human hunters.
