Removal of platelets from blood plasma to improve the quality of extracellular vesicle research

Britta Bettin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of the commonly used centrifugation protocol for preparing cell-free plasma and found that it does not completely remove platelets, leading to variation between studies. In order to improve the quality of EV research, it is recommended to measure and report the platelet concentration in plasma used, or remove platelets through centrifugation and filtration.

HDL-small RNA Export, Transport, and Functional Delivery in Atherosclerosis

Kasey C. Vickers et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that high-density lipoprotein (HDL) transports a diverse set of host and non-host sRNAs that are altered in cardiometabolic diseases. These sRNAs likely contribute to cellular communication within atherosclerotic lesions and may serve as potential disease biomarkers and therapeutic targets, given their bioactivity.

Associations of Sex Hormones and Hormonal Status With Arterial Stiffness in a Female Sample From Reproductive Years to Menopause

Eija K. Laakkonen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association of sex hormones with arterial stiffness in women aged 19-58 years. While age seemed to have a significant impact on arterial stiffness across a wide age range, the hormonal status showed differential associations with arterial stiffness in age-group focused analyses. Further research is needed to clarify potential hormone-mediated mechanisms affecting arterial elasticity.

Toward an Understanding of Extracellular tRNA Biology

Adrian Gabriel Torres et al.

Summary: Extracellular RNAs, including full length tRNAs and tRNA fragments, are seen as potential biomarkers and mediators in cell-to-cell communication. Their activity depends on release and capture mechanisms, possibly orchestrating effects on target cells through sequence types and uptake mechanisms. tRNA modifications may play crucial roles in extracellular tRNA biology.

Acute endurance exercise stimulates circulating levels of mitochondrial-derived peptides in humans

Ferdinand von Walden et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of circulating levels of mitochondrial-derived peptides humanin and MOTS-c to acute resistance and endurance exercise for the first time. The results showed that acute endurance exercise stimulates MDP levels in plasma, while acute resistance exercise does not.

Skeletal Muscle Ribosome and Mitochondrial Biogenesis in Response to Different Exercise Training Modalities

Paulo H. C. Mesquita et al.

Summary: Skeletal muscle adaptations to resistance and endurance training involve increased ribosome and mitochondrial biogenesis, potentially competing with each other. The interference effect when both exercise modes are performed concurrently may be related to the interplay between AMPK and mTORC1 signaling cascades, and the high energy requirements of skeletal muscle.

Formation of a protein corona on the surface of extracellular vesicles in blood plasma

Summary: This study found that a protein corona is formed around EVs in blood plasma, with shared EV corona proteins identified. These results help explain the commonly reported plasma protein 'contamination' of EV preparations and offer a new perspective for EV research.
