LAMMPS-a flexible simulation tool for particle-based materials modeling at the atomic, meso, and continuum scales

Aidan P. Thompson et al.

Summary: LAMMPS, a classical molecular dynamics simulator released as an open source code in 2004, has gained popularity for its wide variety of particle interaction models, platform compatibility, and user control over simulation details. With contributions from numerous developers, it has grown from 50,000 lines of code to a million today, showcasing new capabilities like dynamic load balancing and quantum-accuracy machine learning interatomic potentials.

High accuracy neural network interatomic potential for NiTi shape memory alloy

Hao Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, a neural network interatomic potential (NNIP) model was developed for predicting the martensitic transformation of nickel-titanium alloys. The NNIP achieved high accuracy by using density functional theory (DFT) training data. The simulations accurately predicted temperature-induced, stress-induced, and defect-induced martensitic transformations, showing great agreement with experimental results. This provides a useful tool for guiding the design of nickel-titanium nanowires and their superelasticity.

Theoretical investigation of phase transitions in the shape memory alloy NiTi

Zhigang Wu et al.

Summary: This study reports on the unresolved problems and proposed solutions when using the ab initio approach to study NiTi alloys. The results show that including the electronic free energy in the Gibbs free energy calculations significantly reduces errors in martensitic transition temperatures and resolves controversies on the ground state of NiTi. Additionally, it is discovered that the martensitic transition path in stoichiometric NiTi is directly from B2 to B19' without intermediate phases.

Low-Temperature Mechanical Instabilities Govern High-Temperature Thermodynamics in the Austenite Phase of Shape Memory Alloy Constituents: Ab Initio Simulations of NiTi, NiZr, NiHf, PdTi, and PtTi

Justin B. Haskins et al.

Summary: Recent studies using ab initio molecular dynamics have investigated the accuracy of phase diagrams and the stability of structures in common NiTi-based shape memory alloys. It was found that experimentally determined martensite structures are stabilized by anharmonic effects at elevated temperatures, transitioning to a common austenite structure. The low-temperature B2' structure governs anharmonicity and high-temperature transitions to B2, with energy differences linearly correlated to the transitions.
