Effect of simulation technique on the high-dose damage in tungsten

F. Granberg et al.

Summary: Tungsten is the preferred material for plasma-facing components in fusion reactors. Computer simulations are necessary to understand defect accumulation at an atomistic level. This article investigates accelerated methods for simulating defect evolution and compares them to computationally heavy cumulative simulations. It is found that the acceleration technique chosen can significantly affect defect evolution, but applying cascade annealing can lead to similar results regardless of the initial technique used.

Strain-dependent shear-band structure in a Zr-based bulk metallic glass

C. Liu et al.

Summary: This study provides strong evidence for the accumulation of structural damage in Zr-based bulk metallic glass as a result of shear strain admitted by shear bands. Analysis of shear-band structure with high-angle annular dark field transmission electron microscopy reveals scattered data with an overall trend of increasing local volume dilatation with increasing shear strain. However, locally, a variety of trends are observed, highlighting the strong heterogeneity of structural damage in shear bands in metallic glasses.

Micro-plasticity in a fragile model binary glass

P. M. Derlet et al.

Summary: Atomistic deformation simulations were performed on a model binary glass with strain rates as low as 10(4)/s, revealing a strain rate dependent elastic softening due to thermally-activated localized structural transformations. The material response was found to be distinctly different for two types of local atomic environments, with icosahedrally coordinated substructures responding purely elastically and the rest admitting both elastic and microplastic evolution. These insights shed light onto the structural origins that may govern significant structural evolution in response to elastic loading protocols.

Viscosity and transport in a model fragile metallic glass

P. M. Derlet et al.

Summary: Atomistic simulation reveals how thermally activated structural excitations quantitatively mediate transport and microplasticity in a model binary glass at the microsecond timescale, demonstrating the important role of geometrical frustration in both glass structure and its underlying dynamics through the evolution of a disclination network describing the spatial connectivity of topologically distinct bonding environments.

Determining the three-dimensional atomic structure of an amorphous solid

Yao Yang et al.

Summary: This study developed an atomic electron tomography reconstruction method to experimentally determine the 3D atomic positions of an amorphous solid, successfully characterizing the short- and medium-range order of the 3D atomic arrangement. The research identified four types of crystal-like medium-range order and provided direct experimental evidence to support the efficient cluster packing model for metallic glasses.
