The effect of ergosterol on the allogrooming behavior of termites in response to the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae

Summary: Termites have strong resistance to pathogen infections, but the triggers for their pathogen-avoidance behaviors are still unclear. This study found that termites exposed to Metarhizium anisopliae conidia exhibited increased allogrooming behavior. The presence of ergosterol enhanced the allogrooming behavior of termites in the presence of the fungus.

Summary: Infections early in life can have lasting effects on an organism's development and immunity, including social insect colonies. High brood rearing efforts can interfere with the queen's immune system, while early-life pathogen exposure can improve the immunocompetence of her worker offspring. Transgenerational transfer of the queen's pathogen experience can reduce the disease susceptibility of the entire superorganism.

Summary: Preventing infection is crucial for insect fitness, and many insects alter their behavior in response to disease. Chemical cues mediate this behavioral response, but little is known about the details of these cues. Disease cues not only modify host behavior, but also play a role in immune system activation via neuroendocrine regulation, bypassing the need for direct immunological contact with the parasite.

Summary: Populations of invasive spotted lanternfly in the eastern United States can be infected by native fungal entomopathogens, leading to localized population collapses. Two new fungal pathogens, Metarhizium pemphigi and Ophiocordyceps delicatula, have been discovered infecting L. delicatula. This brings the total number of documented native entopmopathogenic fungi infecting this invasive planthopper in the United States to four species.
