Fronto-cerebellar connectivity mediating cognitive processing speed

Clive H. Y. Wong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive processing speed using different modalities and task rules in attention tasks. The findings suggest that long-range connections might be related to cognitive control, while short-range connections are associated with rule-based stimulus-response processes. This revealed neural network indicates that automaticity, task rules, and effortful top-down attentional control contribute to cognitive speed.

Scale-Free Coupled Dynamics in Brain Networks Captured by Bivariate Focus-Based Multifractal Analysis

Orestis Stylianou et al.

Summary: The study introduces bivariate focus-based multifractal analysis to capture scale-free relations in neural processes. Most connections in the cortical regions exhibit true bivariate multifractality, indicating genuine scale-free coupling of neural dynamics. Differences in long-term autocorrelation and multifractality strength are found in within- and between-resting state networks connections.

Functional Connectivity of the Cognitive Cerebellum

Christophe Habas

Summary: Research has firmly established the major role of the (neo-)cerebellum in cognition and emotion, with the expansion of the associative cortices in the brain being associated with an increased number of interconnections with the neocerebellar cortex, especially lobule VII. This complex organization enables the neocerebellum to monitor and synchronize the main networks involved in cognition and emotion.

A Chiral fNIRS Spotlight on Cerebellar Activation in a Finger Tapping Task

G. Rocco et al.

Summary: Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is demonstrated as a successful and low-cost alternative to functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) for studying cerebellar hemodynamics and observing motor and cognitive processes. A simple experimental protocol using a finger tapping task revealed marked differences in activation and latencies among subjects with different levels of lateralization. Preliminary results also suggest differences in hemodynamic behavior between the brain and cerebellum, encouraging further analysis in this direction.
