Planktic Foraminiferal Assemblages in Surface Sediments From the Subpolar North Atlantic Ocean

Nibedita Sahoo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the distribution of planktic foraminifera in the subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) Ocean and reveals the impact of water mass structure on their assemblages. The results show that temperature and salinity are the dominant ecological factors controlling planktic foraminifera distribution. Cluster analysis identifies three groups of assemblages: a cold/polar group, a mixed (both cold and warm) group, and a warmer temperate group. Changes in planktic foraminifera assemblages suggest a shift in SPNA. This study has implications for paleoceanographic reconstructions in the SPNA Ocean.

Clays and the Origin of Life: The Experiments

Jacob Teunis (Theo) Kloprogge et al.

Summary: This article discusses the possible role of clay in the origin of life. Data from Mars and carbonaceous chondrites suggest that clay may have played an important role in the origin of life on both Mars and Earth. Research has found that the surface of clay minerals can facilitate the formation of amino acids, and that clay itself can be formed through the catalytic role of organic molecules in carbonaceous chondrites. Clay and other related observations need to be experimentally verified.

Epitaxies of Ca sulfates on calcite. II. The main {010}, {001} and {100} forms of bassanite epideposited on the {10.4} substrate form of calcite

Dino Aquilano et al.

Summary: This study presents the epitaxial interactions between bassanite and calcite, providing a theoretical crystallographic background for the replacement of calcite by bassanite. The adsorption/absorption behavior at the bassanite/calcite interfaces is verified, and 2D lattice coincidences are obtained through geometric matching. This research is part of a larger project investigating epitaxial interactions between different materials.

Protection of the DNA from Selected Species of Five Kingdoms in Nature by Ba(II), Sr(II), and Ca(II) Silica-Carbonates: Implications about Biogenicity and Evolving from Prebiotic Chemistry to Biological Chemistry

Mayra Cuellar-Cruz et al.

Summary: The origin of life on Earth is associated with the Precambrian era, and this study explores the possibility of calcium, barium, and strontium biomorphs protecting and preserving biomolecules in a simulated atmosphere of the Precambrian era. Results showed for the first time the formation of the kerogen signal and the internalization of DNA into the structure of biomorphs.

Correlating trace element compositions, petrology, and Raman spectroscopy data in the ∼3.46 Ga Apex chert, Pilbara Craton, Australia

Joti Rouillard et al.

Summary: The origin and preservation of carbonaceous microfossils in the Apex chert unit are hotly debated, with the stratiform portion least influenced by hydrothermal fluids potentially preserving microfossils best. High spatial resolution petrographic observations and trace element analyses reveal the pervasive influence of hydrothermal fluids on the entire unit.

Influence of Abiotic Factors in the Chemical Origin of Life: Biomorphs as a Study Model

Mayra Cuellar-Cruz

Summary: Minerals are believed to have played a crucial role in the origins and development of life, along with abiotic factors in the Precambrian era. Theory and research have contributed to understanding the chemical origins of life, with synthesized materials mimicking biological structures to study the influence of abiotic factors.
