Occurrence characteristics and source appointment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and n-alkanes over the past 100 years in southwest China

Yan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and temporal variations in the fluxes and compositions of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in sediment cores from a small catchment in western Dianchi lake, China. The results showed the ongoing organic contamination from inputs to outputs, highlighting the influence of agricultural and industrial economy on the catchment outlets.

Compound-specific stable carbon and hydrogen isotope analyses of late-Holocene vegetation and precipitation change at Laguna Los Mangos, Costa Rica

Elizabeth A. Yanuskiewicz et al.

Summary: New compound-specific isotope analyses of a sediment core from Laguna Los Mangos in southern Pacific Costa Rica provide insight into late-Holocene precipitation change in a region with limited paleoprecipitation records, vulnerable to future climate change. The study established paleoprecipitation and paleovegetation records using stable hydrogen and carbon isotopes of terrestrially-derived n-alkanes, linking paleohydrologic variability to paleoecological change and human activity. The records indicate a slight increase in C-4 vegetation after maize agriculture introduction, with possible impacts of paleohydrologic variability on vegetation and human activity.

Carbon isotopic composition of leaf wax n-alkanes in mangrove plants along a latitudinal gradient in Brazil

Milena Ceccopieri et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the baseline data of delta C-13 values of leaf wax n-alkanes from mangrove species in Brazil, revealing the physiological characteristics and environmental responses of Avicennia spp. and Rhizophora mangle. The differences in molecular and isotopic signatures of the mangrove species could potentially be used in tracing environmental changes and reconstructing past environmental conditions in biogeochemical studies in mangrove-dominated coastal regions.

Bulk and compound-specific δ13C and n-alkane indices in a palustrine intermontane record for assessing environmental changes over the past 320 ka: the Padul Basin (Southwestern Mediterranean realm)

Jose E. Ortiz et al.

Summary: By analyzing the Padul Basin record, this study found that the delta C-13 values of long-chain n-alkanes are reliable indicators of C-4/C-3 terrestrial vegetation composition in swamps, while the delta C-13 values of C-23 and C-25 alkanes mainly reflect phases of increased water level in lacustrine/palustrine water bodies. Long-chain homologues are abundant in terrestrial plants, and the delta C-13 shifts of medium-chain homologues are primarily limited by CO2 availability.

Distribution and Sources of Carbon, Nitrogen and Their Isotopic Compositions in Tropical Estuarine Sediments of Mtoni, Tanzania

Matobola Joel Mihale et al.

Summary: Elemental and isotopic signatures were used to identify seasonal changes in sedimentary organic matter in the Mtoni estuary and its tributaries. Different proportions of organic matter were found in different seasons and rivers, indicating a mixture of sources contributing to the sediment organic matter.
