Microbial communities in swamps of four mangrove reserves driven by interactions between physicochemical properties and microbe in the North Beibu Gulf, China

Lu Li et al.

Summary: The interactions between environmental factors and microbial communities in mangroves were studied in this research. The results showed that nutrient elements played a more important role than heavy metals in determining the microbial assemblages. The co-occurrence network analysis revealed the involvement of sulfate-reducing and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in the transformation of phosphorus and nitrogen.

Underestimated PAH accumulation potential of blue carbon vegetation: Evidence from sedimentary records of saltmarsh and mangrove in Yueqing Bay, China

Runqiu Huang et al.

Summary: This study examines the records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediment profiles from different blue carbon vegetation types in Yueqing Bay, China. The results show that blue carbon vegetation accelerates the burial of PAHs in sediments and affects their accumulation and retention capacity. Additionally, blue carbon vegetation colonization contributes to changes in the composition of PAHs in sediments.

Enrichment of trace elements by blue carbon habitats in Maoyan Island of Yueqing Bay, China

Saima Sultana et al.

Summary: Mangroves and saltmarshes in Yueqing Bay, China, were found to have higher concentrations of trace elements compared to other habitats. After colonization by vegetation, the concentrations of certain trace elements increased significantly. The sources of these trace elements were found to be both natural and anthropogenic.

Microplastics distribution in different habitats of Ximen Island and the trapping effect of blue carbon habitats on microplastics

Yaxin Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution and changes of microplastics in sediments of different ecosystems in Yueqing Bay, China, and found that mangroves and saltmarsh sediments have a strong enrichment effect on microplastics. The dominant microplastics in the sediments were transparent particles, fibers, and fragments, mainly composed of polyethylene. The study also revealed that runoff input is the main source of microplastics in sediments.

Interactions between heavy metals and bacteria in mangroves

Shanshan Meng et al.

Summary: Environmental heavy metal pollution has become a serious issue in recent years. A study on seven heavy metal-contaminated mangroves in southern China revealed that Zn and Pb were the major pollutants, with the Shenzhen mangrove being the most polluted and the Beihai mangrove the least. Bacterial communities in the mangroves showed significant correlations with heavy metal contamination, with certain bacteria like Pseudomonas and Burkholderia potentially useful for heavy metal remediation. Geo-Chip analyses also indicated the involvement of various functional genes in heavy metal transport, particularly for Ni.

Spartina alterniflora invasions reduce soil fungal diversity and simplify co-occurrence networks in a salt marsh ecosystem

Guangliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated soil fungal communities in a salt marsh ecosystem with native and exotic plant species. It found that plant invasion significantly decreased fungal richness and diversity, altered community composition, and led to homogenization of the fungal community. The invaded sites had a higher proportion of saprophytic fungi, while growth of pathogenic fungi was inhibited. Soil pH and salinity were identified as important factors in shaping the fungal community structures in the context of plant invasion.

Effect of mangrove restoration on sediment properties and bacterial community

Xiao-Xia Ma et al.

Summary: Mangrove reconstruction has a positive impact on sediment properties and bacterial community, with Kandelia obovata being more effective in promoting sediment fertility compared to Avicennia marina. The bacterial community is closely related to mangrove species, sediment properties, and nutrient status.

Changes of the Macrobenthos Community with Non-native Mangrove Rehabilitation (Kandelia obovata) and Salt Marsh Invasion (Spartina alterniflora) in Ximen Island, Zhejiang, China

Qiuxuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of non-native mangrove rehabilitation and salt marsh invasion on macrobenthos communities in Ximen Island, China. Results showed that Spartina alterniflora increased abundance and diversity of macrobenthos compared to mudflats, while macrobenthos abundance in mangrove forests was positively correlated with stand age but diversity indices showed negative correlations.

16S rRNA gene amplicon-based metagenomic analysis of bacterial communities in the rhizospheres of selected mangrove species from Mida Creek and Gazi Bay, Kenya

Edith M. Muwawa et al.

Summary: The vertical distribution and diversity of rhizosphere bacteria in Kenyan mangroves are influenced by geographical location, mangrove species, and sediment chemical parameters. Predicted functional profiling revealed that pathways for sulfur and carbon metabolism were significantly enriched in Gazi Bay compared to Mida Creek.

Phosphate rock reduces the bioavailability of heavy metals by influencing the bacterial communities during aerobic composting

Cui Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial mechanisms associated with heavy metal passivation during composting with phosphate rock amendment. Results showed that phosphate rock improved heavy metal passivation, with changes in bacterial communities influencing the process. The study provides insights into the use of heavy metal passivation techniques during composting.

Improved immobilization of soil cadmium by regulating soil characteristics and microbial community through reductive soil disinfestation

Xin Li et al.

Summary: The study found that bean dregs treatment can increase the CaCO3 content, significantly reduce the exchangeable fraction of Cd in the soil, but increase the relative abundances of certain bacterial groups. At the same time, the fractions of Cd were closely related to the bacterial community at the phylum and genus levels.
