Heavy Metal Pollution in Aquaculture: Sources, Impacts and Mitigation Techniques

Ebuka Chizitere Emenike et al.

Summary: Aquaculture, a rapidly growing industry, has been increasingly studied for its treatment of heavy metal contamination. Techniques such as adsorption, bio-sorption, and phytoremediation have been used to mitigate the risks posed by heavy metals in aquaculture. Future research gaps include studying the effects of these metals on embryonic development and developmental stages of aquaculture organisms.

Assessment of trace metal concentrations in Indian Ocean silky sharks Carcharhinus falciformis and their toxicological concerns

Ming-Huang Wang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the concentrations of nine trace metals in juvenile C. falciformis from the Indian Ocean and discussed their correlations. The results showed that certain metal elements exhibited bioaccumulative behavior, and copper contributed significantly to the total pollution load. Additionally, consuming shark muscle may pose potential chronic non-carcinogenic health risks.

Sediment mercury concentration changes as a response to increased industrial activity in Coronel Bay, Chile

Cristian Chandia et al.

Summary: The research shows that atmospheric mercury in the coastal sediments of central Chile mainly comes from emissions of coal-fired power plants. The surface sediment in Coronel Bay has higher concentrations of Hg, which may be related to industrial activity in the area.

Ecological risks of heavy metals on surficial sediment of Nijhum Dweep (Island), an important biodiversity area of Bangladesh

Mahfuzur Rahman et al.

Summary: Ten surficial sediment samples were collected and analyzed for heavy metals before the monsoon season. The results showed that the surficial sediment of the Island was low to moderately contaminated by Cd and Cu.

Potential sources and toxicity risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments of commercial ports in Taiwan

Chih-Feng Chen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the pollution status, sources, and toxicity risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of 7 major ports in Taiwan. The results showed that PAHs in sediments were mainly contributed by biomass combustion, coal combustion, and vehicle emissions and fossil fuels. Sediments within the ports posed a medium-high risk, but the human health risks were found to be acceptable.

Non-proportional distribution and bioaccumulation of metals between phytoplankton and zooplankton in coastal waters

Frank Paolo Jay B. Albarico et al.

Summary: This study quantified metal concentrations in seawater, phytoplankton, and zooplankton from a heavily impacted coast of southern Taiwan. The results showed that metal concentrations varied among different samples, with higher accumulation in phytoplankton compared to zooplankton.

Spatial variability of water quality and sedimentary organic matter during winter season in coastal aquaculture zone of Korea

Chung-Sook Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the composition, source, and reactivity of sedimentary organic matter in aquaculture systems along the Korean coast. The results showed anthropogenic contamination and the dominant deposition of allochthonous organic matter in some sections. Sulfate reduction was also found to contribute to organic matter decomposition.

Fish farming, metals and antibiotics in the eastern Mediterranean Sea: Is there a threat to sediment wildlife?

Ioanna Kalantzi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the pollution status of marine sediments near aquaculture farms in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, finding that most elements originated from geological sources. The potential ecological risk of certain metals close to fish cages was low, except for Cd in some sampled fish farms. Antibiotics were found to be rare in sediments below fish farms in this region.

Comprehensive assessment of heavy metal pollution and ecological risk in lake sediment by combining total concentration and chemical partitioning

Zhenzhen Yu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bioavailability, pollution, and eco-risk of heavy metals in surface sediments of Erhai Lake, with results indicating that BCR extraction is more efficient compared to HCl extraction. Cd was found to be the most polluted element, while Cr, Cu, and Ni were mainly natural in origin, and Cd, Pb, and Zn existed in both bioavailable and residue forms. Various assessment indices showed inconsistent eco-risks for different metals, highlighting the importance of integrating multiple indices in metal pollution and eco-risk assessments.

Evaluation of potential ecological risks in potential toxic elements contaminated agricultural soils: Correlations between soil contamination and polymetallic mining activity

Xingwang Liu et al.

Summary: Extensive mineral exploitation activities in history have worsened potential toxic elements contamination in Chinese agricultural soils. A comprehensive ecological risk assessment is important for guiding the restoration of contaminated soils, identifying sources of ecological risk, and ensuring the effectiveness of governance measures. The study found that the geoaccumulation index is an accurate method for assessing the potential risk of agricultural soil pollution, and high background values do not necessarily indicate high risk areas.
