Health consequences of disinfection against SARS-CoV-2: Exploring oxidative stress damage using a biomonitoring approach

Ata Rafiee et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether exposure to sodium hypochlorite during the COVID-19 pandemic causes oxidative stress damage in workers engaged in disinfection tasks. The results showed that even low levels of sodium hypochlorite used in disinfection practices might cause oxidative stress related damage. Therefore, implementing protective measures is crucial to reduce the health burdens of exposure to disinfectants.

Analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon intake in the US adult population from NHANES 2005-2014 identifies vulnerable subpopulations, suggests interaction between tobacco smoke exposure and sociodemographic factors

Larisa M. Gearhart-Serna et al.

Summary: This study identified smoking and secondhand smoke exposure as the main factors contributing to variability in PAH intake rates, with significant differences among different demographic groups. It suggested targeted initiatives should be implemented to reduce PAH exposures in vulnerable populations.

A review on analysis methods, source identification, and cancer risk evaluation of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Lord Famiyeh et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmentally persistent, mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic compounds. This review discusses their sources, metabolism, temporal variations, and analytical methods for extraction and characterization. It recommends compound-specific isotopic analysis (CSIA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) for detailed source analysis, highlighting challenges and limitations in using stable carbon isotopic analysis (SCIA) for PAH source apportionment.
