Sustainable chitosan packaging films: Green tea polyphenolic extraction strategies using deep eutectic solvents

Tiago Filipe P. Alves et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of a ternary natural deep eutectic solvent for the extraction of polyphenolic compounds from green tea. The extracted solutions are then used to improve the properties of chitosan films, and the resulting films are evaluated for mechanical, water resistance, optical, and microstructural properties. The presence of GT polyphenolic compounds leads to different surface structures, and films with 10% of NADES show good high water barrier properties and higher resistance.

Natural food colorants: Extraction and stability study

Rushikesh A. Prajapati et al.

Summary: The food colorant market is growing at a 4.6% annual rate and estimated to reach a global market worth of 2.3 billion dollars. The color of food plays a critical role in purchasing decisions as it is associated with freshness and quality. Synthetic colorants have adverse health impacts, leading to increased interest in natural colorant research. Anthocyanins, carotenoids, and betacyanins are discussed as the most applicable natural colorants. Research focuses on finding different sources and extraction methods, improving stability, and discussing degradation mechanisms of food pigments.

Distinguishing three Dragon fruit (Hylocereus spp.) species grown in Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India using morphological, biochemical and molecular traits

K. Abirami et al.

Summary: Dragon fruit, a tropical fruit rich in essential nutrients, was characterized in this study using morphological, biochemical, and molecular techniques to distinguish three species well adapted to Andaman and Nicobar Island. Significant genetic variations were observed, particularly in fruit traits. Peels exhibited higher antioxidant potential compared to pulp, with key traits for distinguishing species being pulp/peel colour, number of spines, and length of areoles in cladode. Genotypes with high carotenoid and xanthophylls content may have industrial importance in addressing vitamin-A deficiency in tropical regions.

Farahnaz Fathordoobady et al.

Summary: Red dragon fruit is a rich source of betalains compounds. In this study, mathematical models were used to predict the properties of alginate microspheres loaded with betacyanins extracted from red dragon fruit peel. The results show that the alginate microspheres effectively encapsulated betacyanins with improved storage stability and antioxidant properties, making them potential carriers for food colorant additives and oral delivery purposes.
