Chitosan- or glycidyl methacrylate-based adsorbents for the removal of dyes from aqueous solutions: a review

Raed A. Mashabi et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the use of chitosan (CS) or glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as dye adsorbents and their modifications using different functional materials. It is found that CS and GMA derivatives have good water-purification properties and can effectively clean wastewater. Thorough knowledge of their adsorption capabilities is required for understanding how CS and GMA remove organic dyes from wastewater.

Pyrolysis of sewage sludge for sustainable biofuels and value-added biochar production

Praveen Kumar Ghodke et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the pyrolysis of sewage sludge to produce eco-friendly fuels and value-added biochar products. The experiments showed that at the optimal temperature of 500 degrees C, the product yield consisted of 22.4 wt% bio-oil, 18.9 wt% pyrolysis gases, and 58.7 wt% biochar. The chemical composition and fuel qualities of bio-oil and pyrolysis gases make them suitable for engine use. Additionally, the biochar analysis demonstrated its potential as organic manure in the agriculture sector.

Production and Destination of Sewage Sludge in the Piemonte Region (Italy): The Results of a Survey for a Future Sustainable Management

Giuseppe Campo et al.

Summary: The management of sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants is a pressing issue, with a survey in the Piemonte region revealing that a significant amount of sludge is disposed of outside of the region or used in agriculture. In response to rising costs and stricter regulations, the regional authority is considering reorganizing its sludge management network with solutions based on proximity and diversification, potentially requiring the planning of new plants for treatment and recovery of sludge.

Effect of Fe and Al ions on the production of biochar from agricultural biomass: Properties, stability and adsorption efficiency of biochar

Lanfang Han et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of Fe (III) and Al (III) during biochar production significantly altered the properties of biochar and influenced its adsorption efficiency for both polar and nonpolar contaminants. These findings provide new insights into designing functional biochar with high stability and adsorption efficiency for organic contaminants from biomass wastes.

A critical review of biosorption of dyes, heavy metals and metalloids from wastewater as an efficient and green process

A. M. Elgarahy et al.

Summary: Wastewater containing dyes, heavy metals, and metalloids poses significant environmental and public health threats, and conventional treatment methods are insufficient in removing them completely. Biosorption emerges as a promising green and cost-effective technology to tackle this issue, with the need for developing more bio-based adsorbents for better pollutant removal efficiency.

The fate and impact of coagulants/flocculants in sludge treatment systems

Qizi Fu et al.

Summary: Coagulants and flocculants are widely used in wastewater treatment and sludge dewatering, but their presence in waste-activated sludge may reduce anaerobic treatment efficiency. They promote the formation of large sludge floc, increase mass transfer resistance, hinder organic release, and inhibit certain bioprocesses. Further research is needed to investigate regulation strategies to mitigate these negative impacts.
