The present study investigated the antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activity of a methanolic extract from the leaf of Parthenium hysterophorous and their chemical characterization. The methanolic extract showed antibacterial activity against clinical bacterial strains and no antifungal activity against fungal strains. It also demonstrated anticancer activity against lung cancer cell line. Therefore, the methanolic extract of P. hysterophorous could be used to develop novel drugs for incurable diseases.
The present study was designed to examine the antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activity of a methanolic extract from the leaf of Parthenium hysterophorous and their chemical characterization. The FT-IR analysis of the methanolic extract revealed the OH functional group, and the GC-MS analysis reported 12 major peaks, which represented 1(2H)-naphthalenone, 6-(1,1 dimethylethyl) octahydro-2,8A-dimethyl- is the major compound with a molecular weight of 236 kDa. The methanolic extract demonstrated antibacterial activity against 3 clinical bacterial strains of the 3 pathogens tested. In 100 mu g/ml concentration, the ethanolic extract exposed a maximum of 18, 19, and 19 mm of inhibition zone against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus sp., respectively. The methanolic extract was disclosed and did not have any antifungal activity at the concentration of 25, 50, 75, and 100 mu g/ml against 2 fungal strains such as Aspergillus sp. and Beauveria sp. The methanolic extract reported the anticancer activity against lung cancer (A549) cell line was 14.1 +/- 0.005-67 +/- 0.03% at 10-100 mu g/ml concentration. As a result, the methanolic extract of P. hysterophorous may be used to develop novel drugs to treat a variety of incurable diseases.
