A review on catalytic pyrolysis for high-quality bio-oil production from biomass

Tewodros Kassa Dada et al.

Summary: This review article focuses on the application of catalytic pyrolysis for obtaining high-quality bio-oil and advanced techniques for bio-oil characterization. The results show that two-dimensional gas chromatography technique can identify a majority of chromatograph in bio-oil analysis, but combining with other analytical techniques is needed for accurate quantification of bio-oil components.

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on pyrolysis of pine saw dust and application of bio-char

J. Lin et al.

Summary: The pyrolysis of pine saw dust at varying temperatures affects the characteristics and potential uses of the resulting bio-gas, bio-oil, and bio-char. Higher pyrolysis temperatures lead to increased bio-gas yield, decreased bio-char yield, and relatively stable bio-oil yield. The bio-gas exhibits high combustible gas content and heating value at higher temperatures, while the main identified compounds in bio-oil offer potential applications in various industries.

Hydrogen-Rich Gas Production from Two-Stage Catalytic Pyrolysis of Pine Sawdust with Calcined Dolomite

Tao Xu et al.

Summary: The catalytic pyrolysis of pine sawdust with calcined dolomite was investigated in this study, and the effects of temperature on product distribution and gas composition were evaluated. The results showed that increasing temperature led to higher gas yield but lower solid and liquid product yields. The calcined dolomite exhibited a significant catalytic effect, reducing tar production by 44% and increasing syngas yield by 52.9%.

Hydrocarbon-Rich Bio-Oil Production from Catalytic Pyrolysis of Biomass over the Undervalued ZSM-11 Zeolites

Liu Wu et al.

Summary: Catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) is an efficient method for converting biomass waste into biofuels, and the choice of catalyst is crucial for its success. In this study, the researchers tested ZSM-11 zeolite with straight channels as a potential catalyst for biomass CFP. The ZSM-11(40) catalyst showed excellent deoxygenation ability and suppressed coke and polyaromatic formation. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibited good reusability after three cycles.

Study of Fe-Ni-Mg catalytic activities for hydrogen-rich gas production from biomass pyrolysis

Qiuxiang Lu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that MgO plays a role in enhancing hydrogen content and acts differently at various Mg/3Fe1Ni ratios. Additionally, the temperature and heating rate were found to impact the products of biomass pyrolysis with the 3Fe1Ni0.4Mg catalyst. The Fe-Ni-Mg catalyst was shown to be a low-cost option for increasing hydrogen production.

Novel Ni-Al nanosheet catalyst with homogeneously embedded nickel nanoparticles for hydrogen-rich syngas production from biomass pyrolysis

Shuangxia Yang et al.

Summary: The innovative porous Ni-Al nanosheet catalyst synthesized by a homogeneous precipitation method via urea hydrolysis is proposed for enhanced hydrogen-rich syngas production from catalytic pyrolysis of rice husk. By tuning catalytic temperatures, the Ni-Al catalysts show almost ten times higher hydrogen production rate and H-2/CO molar ratio compared to absence of catalyst, demonstrating higher catalytic activity and suppression of coke deposition.

Catalytic Pyrolysis of Biomass to Produce Aromatic Hydrocarbons over Calcined Dolomite and ZSM-5

Xu Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the promotion of aromatics production through catalytic pyrolysis of biomass with the combination of calcined dolomite and ZSM-5. Calcined dolomite was found to favor the removal of oxygen-containing components and enhance the formation of BTX, while also promoting the formation of H-2 and inhibiting the formation of naphthalene and 2-methyl-naphthalene. Under certain conditions, the highest BTX yield was achieved with a specific biomass:calcined dolomite:ZSM-5 ratio.

Oxidative dehydrogenation of tight alkanes with carbon dioxide

Guomin Li et al.

Summary: The oxidative dehydrogenation of light alkanes in the presence of CO2 via heterogeneous catalysis is a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach. Different types of catalysts, including metal oxide catalysts, metallic and bimetallic catalysts, and carbide and nitride catalysts, have been discussed for their role in this transformation. The catalytic performance of these catalysts for dehydrogenation of light alkanes with and without CO2 has also been evaluated.
