Storage root yield response to leaf harvest of improved and local cassava varieties in DR Congo

Stefan Hauser et al.

Summary: Cassava leaves are an important vegetable and protein source in sub-Saharan countries, while the yield of edible leaves and storage roots are affected by variety and location. Susceptible varieties had the lowest yields, while improved varieties had higher storage root yields but were still impacted to some extent.

Adoption and Promotion of Resilient Crops for Climate Risk Mitigation and Import Substitution: A Case Analysis of Cassava for South African Agriculture

Assefa B. Amelework et al.

Summary: Cassava is an important starchy root crop grown globally, with potential industrial and economic opportunities in South Africa. However, the lack of reliable supply of good quality cassava roots, a well-established cassava research program, and an existing value chain for industrial scale production are barriers to the development of the cassava industry in South Africa. Successful development of the cassava industry in South Africa will require the importation, characterization, and breeding of high potential germplasm for local conditions, as well as the development of industrial value chains and optimization of breeding and agronomy practices.
