Biochar and lime amendments promote soil nitrification and nitrogen use efficiency by differentially mediating ammonia-oxidizer community in an acidic soil

Jie Zheng et al.

Summary: In this 9-year field experiment, lime and biochar amendments were found to significantly impact soil pH and the content of organic carbon, total nitrogen, and ammonia nitrogen. Under both lime and biochar amendments, the abundance and diversity of ammonia-oxidizing archaeal and bacterial communities were significantly increased, and they had significant effects on potential nitrification activity, crop productivity, and N use efficiency. Structural equation modelling suggested that biochar amendment may mediate the abundance and diversity of potential keystone taxa in the ammonia-oxidizing bacteria community, leading to a stronger impact on soil nitrogen cycling and crop productivity.

Contrasting effects of different pH-raising materials on N2O emissions in acidic upland soils

Yi Cheng et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing soil pH has significant effects on reducing N2O emissions and lowering N2O emissions from denitrification and heterotrophic nitrification. Different acid-neutralizing materials, such as quicklime and pig manure, have varying effects on N2O emissions in acidic soils. Therefore, careful consideration of pH-raising substrates is needed to avoid adverse effects when implementing pH amelioration practices.

Comparing ameliorative effects of biomass ash and alkaline slag on an acidic Ultisol under artificial Masson pine: A field experiment

Renyong Shi et al.

Summary: Forest soil acidification caused by acid deposition poses a serious threat to the forest ecosystem. A three-year field experiment in Southern China showed that the surface application of biomass ash and alkaline slag significantly increased soil pH, reduced exchangeable acidity and active Al, and increased exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the topsoil. Alkaline slag was more effective than biomass ash in ameliorating soil acidity and alleviating soil Al toxicity in the subsoil.
