Lianas have a faster resource acquisition strategy than trees: Below-ground evidence from root traits, phylogeny and the root economics space

Siyuan Wang et al.

Summary: The competitive advantage of lianas over trees may be explained by their lower construction costs and faster resource acquisition strategy in root functional traits. Lianas also exhibit lower phylogenetic conservatism in root traits compared to trees. The root economics space of lianas and trees has different strategies, with lianas adopting faster resource acquisition and trees adopting relatively slower strategies.

Close linkages between leaf functional traits and soil and leaf C:N:P stoichiometry under altered precipitation in a desert steppe in northwestern China

Chunhuan Li et al.

Summary: Leaf functional traits are important for understanding plant nutrient strategies, but the effects of changing precipitation patterns on these traits are unclear. A three-year simulated precipitation experiment in a desert steppe in China showed that leaf traits of five plant species were mostly unaffected by drought conditions, but adjusted under extremely wet conditions. Improved leaf photosynthetic N and P use, lowered leaf P uptake, and enhanced leaf N resorption were observed in one species under wet conditions. Leaf nutrient conservation traits were controlled by leaf and soil properties, particularly for P traits. These findings highlight the importance of precipitation-induced changes in C:N:P stoichiometry for plant nutrient use strategies in desert steppes.

The patterns of N/P/K stoichiometry in the Quercus wutaishanica community among different life forms and organs and their responses to environmental factors in northern China

Shiping Xing et al.

Summary: This study focused on the N/P/K stoichiometry of different plant life forms in a Quercus wutaishanica natural community in northern China. The results showed differences in nutrient stoichiometry among different organs and life forms, with environmental factors impacting each differently. Trees were mainly influenced by topographical factors, while shrubs and herbs were mainly affected by soil factors, leading to variations in N, P, and K stoichiometry influenced by growth environment and adaptation strategies.

Summary: Leaf elemental stoichiometry of Quercus species varies at genus-level across China and is influenced by both climatic and edaphic factors. Climate change may alter nutrient strategies and potentially shift the distribution range of these species.

Effects of increased precipitation on C, N and P stoichiometry at different growth stages of a cold desert annual

Lan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted an experiment in the desert area of Northwest China to investigate the effect of increased precipitation on the utilization and allocation of C, N, and P in the annual grass Eremopyrum distans at different growth stages. The results showed that increased precipitation can improve nutrient absorption and utilization efficiency, with root nutrients being more sensitive to increased precipitation.

Patterns and driving factors of leaf C, N, and P stoichiometry in two forest types with different stand ages in a mid-subtropical zone

Yunni Chang et al.

Summary: Leaf stoichiometry differs among forest stands of different age groups and forest types. The leaf C, N, and P stoichiometry in Chinese fir forests is mainly influenced by soil total P concentration, longitude, growing season precipitation, and mean temperature in July. In natural evergreen broadleaved forests, leaf stoichiometric parameters are significantly correlated with latitude and mean annual precipitation.

Plantations modified leaf elemental stoichiometry compared to the native shrub community in karst areas, Southwest of China

Jiahao Wen et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in leaf elemental compositions between native shrub community and three plantations in the karst region of southwest China. Different plant species showed variations in phosphorus, potassium, and sodium concentrations. Nitrogen to phosphorus ratios, calcium to magnesium ratios, potassium, and sulfur were identified as key indicators for plant nutrient status in the study area. P limitation was alleviated in plantations compared to native shrubs, indicating a strong impact on elemental stoichiometry by plantation forests.

Patterns of nitrogen and phosphorus stoichiometry among leaf, stem and root of desert plants and responses to climate and soil factors in Xinjiang, China

Yan Luo et al.

Summary: Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) play essential roles in plant growth in desert ecosystems. This study found that soil factors have direct influences on N and P stoichiometry among different organs, and climate factors have an indirect effect on N and P stoichiometry by affecting soil factors. These findings can help understand nutrient stoichiometry patterns and utilization strategy of N and P in response to global climate changes in desert ecosystems.

Stoichiometry of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in soil: Effects of agricultural land use and climate at a continental scale

Shengmeng Zheng et al.

Summary: Soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents and their stoichiometric ratios in response to agricultural use were generally similar across the four climate zones, with P increasing and C:N:P ratios decreasing. More intensive agricultural practices and stronger biological and geochemical processes in warmer and wetter zones led to more pronounced differences in soil C, N, and P contents and their stoichiometric ratios among land-use types, compared to cooler and drier climates.

Leaf stoichiometry is synergistically-driven by climate, site, soil characteristics and phylogeny in karst areas, Southwest China

Yanqiong Li et al.

Summary: Leaf stoichiometry and its biogeography are crucial for nutrient cycling in plant communities. This study in karst ecosystems in Southwest China found that abiotic factors such as soil, site, and climate exerted more influence on leaf N, P, and Ca compared to biotic factors like leaf features and phylogeny. The driving factors exhibited a synergistic effect on leaf stoichiometry across different sites, offering key insights for modeling biogeochemical nutrient cycling in karst ecosystems.

Dafeng Hui et al.

Summary: The study on soil C, N, and P stoichiometry in tropical forests on Hainan Island, China revealed significant spatial variations in soil concentrations and ratios, which were influenced by longitude, latitude, and vegetation cover. This information is valuable for enhancing ecosystem models and understanding forest element stoichiometry, ecosystem productivity, and plant-environment relationships.

Spatial patterns of leaf carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stoichiometry and nutrient resorption in Chinese fir across subtropical China

Ran Tong et al.

Summary: Understanding leaf carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stoichiometry at large geographical scales can help reveal plant adaptation strategies to climate change. Research in subtropical China showed different spatial patterns of leaf nutrient concentrations and resorption efficiency, driven mainly by temperature and soil phosphorus levels, while forest development impacted leaf stoichiometry but not nutrient resorption in mid-aged stands.
