Soil fertility indicators and soil stoichiometry in semi-arid steppe rangelands

Sonia Boudjabi et al.

Summary: Soil fertility in semi-arid steppe rangelands is influenced by vegetation cover, climatic conditions, and soil-specific factors. This study investigated the variability of soil physicochemical parameters and fertility in three types of semi-arid steppe rangelands in North Africa. The results showed that the soil physicochemical parameters significantly affected the soil fertility and stoichiometric C:P ratio in these rangelands.

Bacteria in (vermi)composted organic wastes mostly survive when applied to an arable soil cultivated with wheat (Triticum sp. L.)

Alejandra Miranda-Carrazco et al.

Summary: Composting and vermicomposting are environmentally friendly methods that reduce pathogens in organic wastes and provide nutrients for crops. This study found that applying (vermi)composted organic wastes not only adds nutrients to crops and promotes the survival of plant growth-promoting bacteria, but also allows some potential pathogens to survive in the soil.

Microbial regulation of net N mineralisation is driven by C, N, P content and stoichiometry

Qiqi Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the patterns and drivers of soil net nitrogen mineralisation (Nt). The results showed that animal manure significantly increased Nt and available phosphorus content. Structural equation modelling revealed that the total nutrient content had the strongest direct effect on Nt, while stoichiometric ratios of nutrients indirectly regulated Nt through enzyme activities.

Effects of technosols based on organic amendments addition for the recovery of the functionality of degraded quarry soils under semiarid Mediterranean climate: A field study

Rocio Soria et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effects of different organic amendments on the restoration of degraded soils in a semiarid limestone quarry. The results showed that the amended technosols had improved soil quality, functionality, and organic matter dynamics compared to unamended and natural soils. The molecular composition of the organic matter in technosols amended with plant compost was similar to that of nearby natural soils.

Biogeographical Patterns and Assembly of Bacterial Communities in Saline Soils of Northeast China

Xiaolong Liang et al.

Summary: Increasing salinity negatively affects soil fertility and poses threats to soil ecosystem productivity. This study characterized the bacterial community composition and diversity in saline-sodic soils in Northeast China and found that soil pH, electrical conductivity, and salt content significantly influenced the bacterial communities. Actinobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes were enriched in high soil sodicity and salinity, while Acidobacteria and Proteobacteria were suppressed by high pH and salt stress. Understanding the composition and diversity of bacterial communities in salt-affected soils is important for ecosystem restoration.

Effects of Different Land Use Types and Soil Depth on Soil Nutrients and Soil Bacterial Communities in a Karst Area, Southwest China

Yuke Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of the interactions between soil depth and different land use types on soil nutrients and bacterial communities in a karst area. The results showed that land use types and soil depth significantly influenced the soil nutrient content and bacterial diversity. Acidobacteria and Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla at soil depths of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm.

Bioponic system for nitrogen and phosphorus recovery from chicken manure: Evaluation of manure loading and microbial communities

Sumeth Wongkiew et al.

Summary: Bioponics combines biological treatment of nutrient-rich waste with hydroponics. Chicken manure based-nutrient film technique bioponics effectively released nitrogen and phosphorus, promoting efficient growth of lettuce. Microbial genera like Nocardiopsis, Romboutsia, and Saccharomonospora may play crucial roles in achieving better nutrient recovery in bioponics.

Quarry restoration treatments from recycled waste modify the physicochemical soil properties, composition and activity of bacterial communities and priming effect in semi-arid areas

N. Rodriguez-Berbel et al.

Summary: This research investigated the short-term responses of semi-arid soils degraded by mining to different organic amendments in a limestone quarry in Almeria, Spain. Results showed that the application of organic amendments significantly improved soil properties and bacterial diversity, with a positive priming effect on soil organic matter mineralisation. Soil bacterial communities were found to be influenced by the types of organic amendments applied, and certain bacterial taxa played key roles in the carbon cycle in restored soils.
